Kustom Komet

Evening, Hambers. I've lurked here a time or two over the last few years, but never joined until now. I was mainly into later model cars and Falcons/Comets, and was/am a member of other boards that catered to that stuff.

I wasn't really into trad rods until I started building what I call "upscale rat rods"; basically safe, well engineered freeway capable rods with floor boards, flat paint, and no new stuff except for front axles and the like, for a living. Now growing up in the '70s and the '80s, I sort of liked the billet look when it came out, but now the rods that stop me in my tracks are always traditional looking cars with steel wheels and vintage engines like Y blocks, early Hemis, and Nailheads. I like the rats, and I like the shiny versions as well.

I've already bought and comprehensively "de-billeted" two rods, a '23 T roadster and a '40 Ford pickup, going full trad on both. It was very satisfying, especially on the '40, which was built in 1990 and had many crimes foisted upon it, including monochromatic peach paint with directional Enkei wheels, billet everything (I scrapped it all out with my soda cans) and digital dash. A John Deere Blitz Black makeover with red steelies and wide whites brought it back to respectability. My current project is a '60 Comet mild kustom, which is nearing completion and should pass muster here, at least I hope it will.

While I am new to HAMB, I am not new to car message boards and I am a moderator on one other board - so dousing flame wars and keeping discussions OT is a semi-regular excercise. In other words, I get it. At 40, and with a spattering of gray hair and a traditional view on most things in life, I'm teetering on the edge of old-fartdom. I never thought about myself in those terms until I started mixing it up with the twenty-something, heavily tatted rat rodders in the local scene. An eye opener, that's for sure.

The neat thing about the HAMB is the diverse group it attracts, I've run into more than one guy in his 60s who "hates computers" and most newfangled things, but is a member here and can post up pics and links with the best of them. The HAMB seems to be the old farts' exception to the rule, and most of them grudgingly accept ebay as well, especially if they got cool stuff there.

That's probably enough for now.
