....driving to work today I thought I was living in a bowl of after dinner mints. WHo the hell ever came up with the idea that spending tons of money on a car, that is built with power that will never be used, pastel colors? I mean seriously folks, mint green? Who ever thought mint green, and powder blue, and the worst of all lavender, were good ideas? The world is a strange, strange place.

NOW something like that I can appreciate. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate a pastel as a joke or good humor thing. Or as a big F$%^ You, that's cool. But its the argument that its aestheticly pleasing that is my beef. Maybe I just have a big ass bias against pastel colors in general? Maybe they just give me haunting images of elderly homes, and non-pareils in dishes on side tables. Maybe its in denial of when I was 8 and I thought it was a good idea to dress like Don Johnson on Miami Vice?
I think I need a metal flake fix.

Probably a rebound from the time when everything was painted red. These things go in cycles, and, by the way, the owner probably doesn't give a damn about what you think. And that is as it should be.

Reason for pink on dis one, it's the ole ladies car.
It's not really pink. It's tea rose pearl metallic and iris (hurts to even say it!) hehe http://img32.photobucket.com/albums/v95/moondisc/sylvansunset3.jpg

Metallics are a whole other breed. A more relevant, warmly embraced breed. A beautiful breed.
And Pink is not pastel, pastel is just a certain shade spectrum of colors that should be avoided like the plague.
The old lady's got a nice ride there, by the way.

<font color="green">Sorry,
But I like the mint green.
Don't know why.
I like the mint green and cream combo like the Harley had on the Heritage a few years back.
I'm a green kinda guy though.

Well...
I'm actually entertaining the idea of painting my car a soft 50's pink with a white or black roof. I'm not totally sold on it yet, but I do love pastels on certain cars. My mom used to have a baby blue 47 Chevy convertible with a white top and interior and that car was beautiful and traditional. Pastels were fairly common on 50's cars, pink was a factory color option on some Fairlanes, Edsels, etc.
I think on the right car done the right way in pastels can be really nice. I don't think I'd ever put it on something that was a an obvious "hot rod"...

However.
SOMEBODY HAS GOT TO EXPLAIN TO ME THE USE OF PINK AND LAVENDER ON A "HOT ROD" or (Performance machine).
Somebody please explain that one to me.......
[/ QUOTE ]
VT it's really very simple:
Back when most cars were either painted black, red,or white, somebody was painting their rod white and were running out of paint in the middle of the(brush)job.Being the,"economical" type(let that read cheap prick)they noticed that they had some red paint left over from another job and decided to mix the two together to stretch out the remaining paint. And so the pink paint job was born.
The same occurrence happened a few weeks later when in the midst of doing what had now become the latest fad(pink cars)they once again were running short of paint.Noticing they had some blue paint up on the shelf, they threw that in with the pink and PRESTO! The lavender paint scheme was created!
And if think that there may be a grain of truth to the preceding tales, then stick around because I have the real estate deal of the lifetime:Some REALLY great BRIDGE property down New Yawk way http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I figure somebody would have answered this correctly by now.......
'chainers use pastel colors to keep their spouses happy---how else can you justify spending $100k on an "old car"?
"YOU can pick the color, honey" http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
One of my ex live-ins referred to my deuce 3-window as "baby car" cause it was "so little and cute"

Yeah well I'm kicking your ass for winning that potential shifter knob from Toyghoul, so it doesn't matter.:) I just found out about it, that thing rocks.
And for any of those that are offended by my marked rant about color palets, I was aiming it at those who wouldn't be found on this board anyway. But as such I shall you give you fodder to fire away at me, for my one motorcycle is purple.

There are no pink Hot Rods.......but I'm betting there are a shit load of Salmon ones. "Charcoal and Salmon was pretty popular in the Fifties.. One of my Dads's favorite paint schemes (Reminds him of High School and College).
No pastels on Hot Rods? The Hirohata Merc is screwed then.

It was morning, I'm not a morning person.:)
I can not be held responsible for that which eminates from me.....
Its purple either because I bought it that way at a really good deal(with plans of painting it later) or have a secret sub-conscious fantasy of living out Purple Rain. Man, I hope its not the second.

Okay, okay people....you've shown me there's an error in my ways. Pastels can work, if done right. I stand before you but a humble man. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I still don't like pastel colors though..... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

At an NSRA Nats years ago, on observing all the pastel cars, a friend of mine said "Looks like Walt Disney threw up".
I think some pastel cars work well (example enclosed), particularly if all the details are consistent. They don't say "Badass Gunslinger Hot Rod", though, and a car that's all engine and tires looks dumb in a girly color.

Kinda depends on the car. This would suck on an A-V8, but looks OK here.

Depends on the era of the build. The 80-90s monochromatic/no chrome look sucks in any color, not just the pastels. There's more to life than flat black...

looks like a bunch of easter eggs
What about the MOST pastel color, WHITE!
I don't think it's the pastel colors that are ugly, it's the mono-chromatic, paint everything that isn't billet, and match it with the tweed upholstery, air conditioned, power windowed, sterile looking "STREET RODS" that look like the overpoweringly sick sweet smell of a candy store smells.
Customs and Kustoms look great in pastels, always have, but they need to be mixed up with a darker tone too, Like that two tone green Merc that guy (and Sam Barris) built wayback when, what's his name. Bob Hirohata, I think.
Or they need an irridescent pearl that changes tone depending on which way the light hits it.
That clinches it... Im painting my Elky "Harlem Pussy Packer Yellow" http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
With a silver flake roof....
