View Full Version : 'best Launch proceedure'...?

Just letting my mind wander a little, and upfront, I realise that each track is prepared differently, and similarly, temperatures and circumstances change, so the 'what works' process will be different for everyone.....to a degree.

Whilst some may consider it a 'trade secret' I'm sure most won't mind sharing the info as it's not really rocket science, and to some degree, it may assist those of us who are 'fresh' to drag racing, especially in these cars.

Anyhow, things I've noticed that seem to 'work' amongst us over here....

* L78 tyre - air pressure generally seems best at about 20 psi
* 1's gear burnout - just to clean tyres, nothing more, stick into 2nd
* 2n'd gear launch (1'st is a waste of time) - feathering clutch at 3000-3500 rpm, get off clutch as soon as possible, shift to 3rd (top) at 5500rpm, then drive it home.

Now again, everyone's different, but I've been noting the top end speed's that are being reached, with significantly different et's, the launch seems to either make or break, with the shifts being the challenge for us.

Do those of you running those quick times have any suggestions to share? things that you've found consistently 'work'?

Cheers,

Drewfus

Don't have ours running yet but the 5500 rpm sounds rather high for a flatty. We're setting our quick change up for a trap speed of 105 mph @ 4500 rpm on series G tires. Will start launch in 2nd.

Sounds like you've got the right idea on your startline routine. I'll let you know how the new tranny works out this weekend.

We launch our car at 4000rpm,2nd gear start. Indy had so much VHT down it would lug the motor down bad even with increasing the tire pressure. We are hooking low gear back up.
We go through the lights at 5800RPM.

On the two tracks that I have run, "Nightmare" seems to hook up better with no rpm's and then hammering the throttle and dumping the clutch at the same time.
In other words, I'm on the line with the car idleing, and hit the throttle and dump the clutch at the same time.
I'm not running a posi, so I have to do things a little different.

Ask the guys that saw my awesome launch Friday night a Tulsa. I did that new dance, the G-78 15 Hop.

Hey Randy. How many cars showed up friday night and who were they? It sounds like you might have your tranny problems fixed. And also a new fast time for the crooked six.
