Far as my 'artwork' goes, you can blame Whodaky. Whe I first picked up the brush about five weekends ago, instead of tellin me what I did was crap, he encouraged me and said I'd be OK if I practised. Yeah, the base kit is the Revell '48 Ford convertible. This body is a resin. I chopped the top on it, and the original caster is now going to cast this chopped version. I'll know more after I send this one to him...

[/ QUOTE ]
Rob:The trophy was fairly easy to do.The base was a yard sale find(a hardwood clock)for 25 cents. It had a hole already drilled and counterbored in the base. The 1-Shot can I didn't even wash out;picked it out of the trash and drilled holes top and bottom.Bolted it to the base and filled it with Speedi-Dri(for weight and to make it less explosive). The top was part of a box of trophy parts I bought at a swap meet once for about $2(I think there were a dozen of them).I cut a slot in the base with my yard sale miter saw($3)and glued the plate on with Gorilla Glue. The striping brush was one that didn't work very well.I cleaned the oil out and put the hair in clear craft glue and formed it to shape as it dried and then attached it with the same glue.
I'm making several for an upcoming motorcycle show and will show them when they're finished. They are H-D rear sprockets that are going to be rough-ground and then candied with various colors.I'm going to use one of those folding picture stands for the base(more glue)and attach a model chopper in the middle(available at the local Big Lots for about $2 apiece)and a royal flush poker hand(I'll probably photocopy those)in a fan shape underneath the bike. It's for a memorial poker run for a friend who died last year. Will post pics.

[/ QUOTE ]

I doubt that it's possible.

Keep in mind I'm only a beginner, but I kinda got the loading and palleting the brush deal sussed out early enough. However, sometimes had the paint a little too sloppy and of course it'd run down to the point of the brush and I'd end up with a big blob at the beginning of my line. So I started using my fingertips to squeeze the bristles and get rid of the bulk paint at the working end of the brush. What else I learned from that is that I also get a much better 'feel' for the paint. Y'know, not to moist, not to dry, but just right for pulling a line. So now I find myslef doing that as a matter of course, each time I load the brush.

My problem is the automatic reaction, which I guess is kind of a bloke/guy thing, y'know, wiping the sticky painty fingers on the leg of my brand new Levis. And of course I did that the first time after SWMBO suggested I shouldn't be wearing new jeans when I'm painting. But of course I hadda respond with, "This is not messy painting, so there's no need to change into anything a bit grungy."

The first pair of new jeans she 'lived' with, the second pair, done the following day...... well that's a whole different ballgame.

Can I blame Whodaky for that too. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Carps:I usually pour the 1-Shot into smaller(1/4 pint)cans so I can carry more colors with less weight and have less waste. If a 1/4 pint can goes bad,you pitch it;if a pint can goes bad,you skim it and keep using it.That particular can I had just emptied into smaller cans a couple days ago.BTW I love the box!Doing really good stuff!
As far as keeping your hands clean,it's difficult but not impossible.I palette my brush on a glossy magazine(the kind my wife gets 50 of every day in the mail)rather than with my fingers.Use an aluminum clipboard that I've added feet to(if I'm using it by itself)and also a center bolt to mount it to an old camera tripod. The clipboard I bought at a stationery supplier and the tripod was a yard sale find.I keep several around the shop.I also have small metal cups attached that I can put the 1oz medicine cups in for my thinner and/or custom mixed paints.I have a medium sized alligator clip attached also that I use to hold a paint brush when it isn't being used(I don't know how many brushes I've had roll off the palette when I'm not looking).
another thing I've found that works nicely is if you are working over a surface that is going to be cleared, you can keep the fingerprints to a minimum by wearing a cheap cotton glove on the hand you use to steady yourself.I tried using one on my painting hand by cutting off the fingers but it was more bother than anything.
A good idea when working is to have a clean paper towel and some wax and grease remover handy in case you either get paint on your hands or the work.I use this rather than the thinner I'm using because it wipes cleaner and dries faster(mineral spirits will stay wet forever on the surface you're trying to stripe!).
As far as getting 1-Shot on your clothes:if you want to have any chance of getting it out afterwards, clean off as much as you can immediately with mineral spirits and then put a goodly amount of brush oil on the remaining part.It will keep the paint from setting until you can clean it properly.Carbon tetrachloride(Carbona Cleaning Fluid)used to be good for getting paint out but I don't know how available it is now and you DONT want to have that stuff laying against your skin for any length of time!(I think its carcinogenic anyway).
Well the rant is over;enjoy the rest of the show!

Wayfarer that firefight shot is amazing. Almost a striped design in itself.
Here's a couple of shots. Was messsing with the paints the other night an had the Z ero chopper book laying around and thought it would make a great canvas. It did!

I wish this picture posting would play a consistant game game for me.
Mr Carp's just read the rest of your long winded posts. No don't blame it all on me. I am not one of those stripers who pulls a brush load of paint through his fingers and would never encourage anyone to do so!. I am the type that if I did that I would end up with finger prints everywhere. You've seen how I work and in the professional manner I do so. My striping technique, my banter with the person I maybe striping for and anyone else who may be looking on. It is all part of the stripers package. Working in front of a bunch of people can be very intimidating to be sure.
Safari I like your idea about the use of a camera tripod.

Thanx for the advice Ray, I think I have a long way to go before mine's even a poofteenh as good as your stuff.

I usually pour the 1-Shot into smaller(1/4 pint)cans so I can carry more colors with less weight and have less waste.

[/ QUOTE ]
The smallest cans I've been able to find here are one pint. However, I've been using up a bit by mixing it in 1/2 pint cans to develop my own colours.

[ QUOTE ]
I love the box!Doing really good stuff!

[/ QUOTE ]
Thanx, that means a lot to me. I had no plan when I started, just to practice and try and get some symetry in my work. Sorta just kept going adding colours and trying different strokes to see what I'd get. The hardest thing I've found is 'less often is more' and it was tough to stop when I did with the glovebox lid, coz the conservative part of me said, "that's cool" and the crazy part said, "needs more colours and line."

[ QUOTE ]
I palette my brush on a glossy magazine(the kind my wife gets 50 of every day in the mail)rather than with my fingers.

I can see how that might also help the paint stay moist longer, I'm using the old used car guidses and such with pages like the phone book. The paint doesn't soak thru but it does seem to dry out quicker than I'd like.

Here are some pix of my palettes that I use.The legs are constructed with parts readily available at a good hardware store. The feet, long hex nuts, etc.are reasonably priced also. You can use any clipboard but I like the aluminum as it is a bit sturdier than either fiberboard or plastic and is impervious to solvents. One of the palettes was an old photo light stand and the top is held on by a knurled head screw. It is designed so you can mount it either flat for working or at 90 degrees for storage. It even has a carry handle on it.Someone gave it to me at a job I was doing;they'd had it kicking around the shop for years.I mounted the clipboard to it and it was ready to work. On one of them the metal cups are store bought at an artist supply store while the other one has screw top lids from 1-quart cans affixed. They work just as well and are free!

Monkey see Monkey DODO ... Ray after Johnny Z / Dr.Rru this year, I came home and put this one togeather from all dollar store parts. The handle on center bottom is at a natural hand angle when held out infront of me. And I made that handle a bit shorter so the pallet will not rock if I set it down on a hood or deck. Thanks http://rebel-air.net/db5/00490/rebel-air.net/_uimages/pallet.jpg http://rebel-air.net/db5/00490/rebel-air.net/_uimages/palletlegs.jpg

GREAT SETUP! Looks like it really does the job and it didn't cost a gazillion bucks. The only thing I might add(and I'm doing it to mine also)is maybe to attach a little of that anti-skid material on the bottom of the legs.

Hey Safarinut,
I think I found something that's gunna work a treat.

Old projector stand, it has a flat metal top with a lipped edge so paint spills won't end up on the floor. I'm figuring to remove the clamp from a clipboard and pop rivet it directly to the flat top bit of the stand. It's a pretty sturdy deal and can be set at varying heights. I'm thinking a dolly wheel on each leg might be good to make it easy to move around when working on a big job.

Still looking for suitable holders for paint and reducer cups and thinking maybe it should have more than just two so I can have a few different colours ready at once.

Soon as I get it fully sorted, I'll post a pic or two.

Meanwhile, I've got my first real job today, striping the flames on my pals black primered model A. Hey, he liked my bench grinder, I'm game and his car is a challenge. Heck, if I do the flames right he might even let me try some freehand striping too. Pics as soon as we're done.

PS - Mrs Carps thanks you all for encouraging me. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Last night we went to a shop where a friend's '49 Merc is being built. This sucker is unreal! The car will be finished in bare metal with a clear coat over it, and sooner or later the beautiful flathead is gonna be replaced with one of the only other motors that will look as good/better....a HEMI http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
The striping is done by Paul Quaife(sp?) The car itself is art, it was once a four door with a whole heap of the body missing (rusty as hell). Can't rememberhow much its chopped, but is one of the best looking chops on a merc ive seen.
What you guys think? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I've been attempting the model car thing for about a year or so, not any good yet, but thought you might like to see some of my ideas.
I dont know how to post more than one picture, so bare with me http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

This pic is what i would like to build for my first car. It "runs" a triple carbed flathead. The Roadster above has a Blown ardun, the motor being form the F1 kit, the blower from the 55 chev "street machine" kit.

The final pic is of another car I wanna build http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Basicly box stock, except front wheels are from the Model A "Rat Rod" kit,(those wheels are the best steel wheel's ive seen) and has a sbc from the Thom Taylor 34 roadster. The 34 is my next project, going to try and make it a very early 50's Hot rod. Also building a 28 Closed cab pickup, with the left overs from the A RPU. It isn't realistic, as the chassis is make up from the parts tree http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I have chopped it, runs '36 ford wheels, twin carbed 4 banger and pretty much sits on the ground.

That's some kool shit, thanks for posting it Sean.

As for striping, Paul Quiafe would have to be one of the best downunder, followed closely by Whodaky. That kid can pull lines with his eyes shut and somehow they always come out looking soo good.

I've heard about the Merc but this is the first time I've seen pics, it's lookin better than I imagined, but why mess it up with a bloody great boat anchor of an engine, when that flatty looks so good down there in the hole?

The models are cool too, so why don't you bring 'em to the picnic for the model car show. never know you may just win a trophy. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif The '36 I especially like although I think the Deuce needs hairpins. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The merc looks so much better in person, pictures just cannot do it justice. The Flatty is staying in there for a while, but hey, when you already have a 392 block, might as well put it to use. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Here is a pic of it, to give you a better look at the chop, this pic was taken quite a while ago, when Tony Eisner owned it. The same bodyshop has done all of the work, and since this photo was taken, a whole heap more has been done.
Carps, I'm no trophy hunter, but if you need some models for the picnic, I could chuck a couple in, just make sure they're in a far corner http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Following the edge of the flames was a lot harder than I figured and keeping the lines nice and fat was tough as this was the first time I've used anything other than a 000 or 00 brush.

The car does look heaps better with the blue striping, compared to without. Note the cool projector stand, probably a bit bulkier than tripod type, but it works for me.

Lookin' good my man!I definitely like your choice of pallet material LOL! Stand looks like it does the job.
One thing I have learned about doing flame edges:keeping the edge in view.If you're right-handed,you might want to try the underhand method:that is;pulling the line from right to left with the line either above your hand(if you're pulling a side stripe)or to the left of your hand.Makes it easier to see where you're going with it.
Another thing I find helpful is to do the radius first.I start just before the radius begins and pull it all the way around to the other side. Then I pull the line back to the tip of the flame on one side and then the other.I repeat this until done.
I think I might do a small tech thing on outlining flames and pulling long straight lines when I get some free time.Until then keep those brushes wet!

WOW! Now you're making me feel like a pro. I learned that bit pretty quick and ended up in all manner of weird positions, including on my back for the little buggers along the lower edges.

Yes please! I for one would find it much better knowing the hard stuff in advance than the frustration of having to rub out and try another method as you learn http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanx again for the great advice.
