ok I'm pissed. every time i've had a run in with the police they've been dicks, even when I've gone out of my way to be polite. What gives? I was driving my late model truck today and I get pulled over. The cop walks up to my car I already have my license and registration out, still not knowing what I did. and he says in a very rude voice " do you know why I pulled you over" I said no and he said you dindt have your seatbelt on and I did. I had the shoulder strap under my arm cause its more comfortable to me. But he insits that I put it on when I put the belt on when I saw him. so he gives me a ticket for a improperly worn seatbelt. It was on dammit fine if I wore it wrong and that deserves a ticket but damn when Im trying to be nice have all my shit to show you when you walk up to the car the least they could do is be nice back and not be a dick. The time beforfe that I was in palmdale at a hotel cause I was working at the airforce base. I was getting my lugage out of the car and an cop ran my plates and asked me where the place m y car is registered is. I explain to him then asks me if I was a guest at the hotel. wshy the hell would I be getting luggage out of the car if I wasn't staying at the hotel. then he had the nerve to ask which room I was in and then when I asked him why was there a problem he said no. what the fuck. if theres no problem why do you waste the time run my plates and then watse my time interogating me in the parking lot. sorry for the rant but Im fed up.

I grew up in Redondo. There isn't anything else for them to do. There's only so many times they can bust the same old potheads for hanging out at Taco Bell past curfew. They gotta meet their ticket quota every month too.
I knew atleast 3 different cops personally in the area. I'm not sure what kind of car you drive that isn't late model, but find the cop that digs it, and make friends. The very sparse contact I have had with the cops I made an impression on, has saved my ass many times. One of them dug my friends 70 Chevelle so we took him for a ride and even let the guy drive for a bit. That experience saved my ass more times than I can count.
Sometimes, name dropping is good. Was it an older cop? Whats the name on the ticket.

Just fight the seatbelt ticket in court. Be polite about it. And wear clean underwear.

Hell, you were in PALMPTON, unloading luggage into a hotel room. Sounds like the beginnings of some serious trafficing, even if it truly wasnt! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
You get in an a little accident wearing your seatbelt like that, you will definately be going to the hospital in pain to find out whether or not your internal organs are ok... better to not wear it at all than do as you did!

Do yo smell BACON? haha I grew up in Redondo area and they are fuckin dicks there for sure... I have had many runins... my buddy has a 23Tbucket that is super 80's trailerqueen (it was 85 so you cant give me shit hahah) and we were creapin around Redondo when we got pulled over by a Redondo Bch PD. I was scared to hear what his dad was going to say... buuuusted! The fuckin cops had to use the front and back of the ticket for all the fixits. When the cop left my buddy looked at me and said not to worry because his mom works for the sherrifs and she gets all the tickets signed off so we both laughed.

get used to seat belt checks. They've been splattering all over TV that starting Memorial Day Weekend they were going to blitz the country. Here in NY we have the BUNY system (buckle up NY)last year they ticketed over 56,000 people, now each ticket is $50. PLUS a $50/60 SURCHARGE for each ticket, so do the math, an exellent source of "funds". Steve, if the shoulder harness bothers you, place a small clamp (mine is plastic ) when you wear the belt, I got my upper belt so it wont retract, therefor it doesn't constantly move in and out and lock up and jamb and... you know what a pain in the ass they are

Go ahead and drop that name. That will piss an officer off pretty good. Sorry he didn't kiss your ass for handing your license and insurance to him as you’re required to do anyway. Guess he didn't look at it as a great achievement in his life, someone doing what they're supposed to do.
Speaking of that, if you had been doing what you're supposed to do by wearing your seatbelt properly then you wouldn't have even got this thing started in the first place.
As far as the hotel goes, come work a few nights with an officer covering a hotel area. See some of the shit that goes on there. The guy inconvenienced you by what 30 seconds? You ever think he was doing his part to make the hotel YOU'RE staying in safer? Probably not.
I usually let these posts slide on here. You know "fuckin dick cop, lazy cop, fill his quota, pig, donut eating fuckin cop,....bla..bla..bla. But sometimes when I'm in the right mood shit pissess me off.
Tell your kid you got working at the Subway, or local pizza shop to make sure he calls the fire department next time he's robbed. I'm sure they'll be able to save his life....if they rob him with a f-ing blow torch.
I guess I need to pull over and wait for the grammar police now. Don't know if I used proper sentence structure, spelling, overall good grammer. I gotta hurry and get my information out to impress them. Gee I hope they're nice to me and not like that bitch at the Taco Bell drive-thru. One day I'm gonna get enough of her ass and post about it on a hot rod message board.

That explains the customer service nowadays. I think I'll identify with the pimply-faced kid behind the register at Taco Bell, he's had a rough day of people ordering burritos, I should cut him a break when he's rude to me.
If I explain that I'VE had a rough day/week/life, is the officer gonna cut me some slack?

Ok, here's what I've got...
That's bullshit. I know what your saying, and yeah it's partially true and I'm greatfull for what the police do to keep us safe. BUT when you get pulled over, are you supposed to fuckin bend over and let the cop have his way??? It doesn't matter if you have somewhere to be or not. If the cop decides "hey, that punk looks sorta kinda suspicious" and chooses to pull you over and search your car only to find nothing, then writes you a bullshit ticket because maybe your tag light is out, it's a major waste of time!! Another thing that pisses me off is when you get pulled over, the cop takes your license and registration, everything is cool, then 5 minutes later ANOTHER cop shows up, like the first guy needs backup or something??? Yeah, I'm gonna kill the first guy because he caught me speeding. In some places, I understand it, but in Suburbia U.S.A., the only reason I can give is that they've got nothing better to do. There are asshole cops and then there are cool cops. It's just how it is...

I agree that cops have a stressful job, but really, what about that whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing??? A lot of cops treat you like you're Osama himself because your tailight's out. I think they would get a little better response and a WHOLE LOT more respect if they did just try to be nice.
I am also friends with quite a few cops, and if any of you guys have ever hung out with cops on a personal level, you'll realize that in a lot of cases, they ARE dicks on purpose! I've heard about all the things you can do to find a reason to pull a person over, and I've heard the stories about pulling people over just to fuck with them, and pulling peopl over just cuz you're bored. These stories came from AWESOME guys, that are Very cool, with great personalities, and good senses of humor, and THEY pull that kinda shit. So how much better is it gonna be coming from the cop that has a MAJOR attitude problem, and has something to prove to society???
Correct me if i'm wrong desert guys, but isn't palmdale / lancaster the training ground for all the new LAPD academy graduates before they get sent "down below"? They're just a BIT gung-ho around here.
My girlfriend got pulled over for having a tow ball blocking the license plate. Just like 10,000 other trucks around here. So the cop runs her licence, and it turns out that it's suspended. Come to find out later that it was a paperwork issue at DMV that only took two months to get straightened out. Anyhow, that guy was rude and hateful as hell. Neither of us mouthed him or any crap like that, he just reeked of bad attitude.
I understand that the police have a job to do. I understand that the job involves hassling the common man to find the "bad guy" in the bunch. It's just that 90% of them don't have to act like smug "better than you" condescending pricks while they do their job. I'm not saying be my new best friend when you write a ticket, just how about some common courtesy if we give it to you.

illl beat all of you. I got pulled over 4 times within an hour by the same towns force.....i think it was a joke.

i got pulled over...the cop goes can you turn on your lights for me..i said yes...BAM one was out..(i swear on my life it must have went out just as i was going by the cop) i still have fog lights, etc. but it doesnt matter. he actually gives me a ticket for it...you could feel the light it was still hot!!!
now i wasnt a dick to him..i get really nervous and shake from anxiety usually, with about 100 yes sirs. ok..so he gives me a ticket...no biggie..i understand
i pull a mile up the road to make a u turn...BAM pulled over again by another cop same town, guy goes "lets see if you can be a smart guy and tell me why im pulling you over" i said "the same reason your buddy did a few minutes ago and handed him the ticket....he let me go..only to be stopped AGAIN from another cop...he said the SAME THING THE SECOND COP SAID..i asked it if was a joke...he said no...then I got pulled over AGAIN getting onto the highway..at this point i asked the cop..."look, should I just get a hotel and wait until the autoparts stores open?" he was cool about it and laughed...but man...4 times within an hour for a headlight that was STILL WAEM. haha.
sorry guys..thats my story. other than that no runnins with the cops that i have complaints about.

From working in Law Enforcement for over 4 years, I have seen both sides of the fence. I would say 10% of the cops I worked with should not have been cops. Between bogus tickets to phony reports that would include me (even when I was on another call). There were times when I was a dick because it was warranted and when you see SOOOOO many stupid things done over and over and over, it makes you think how dumb can people be. Now, from being a citizen now and getting pulled over 5 years ago, I had a horrible experience with a cop and did get a ticket. I was in the wrong, but he did not have to be an asshole, which he was. Like I said, there are cops out there that suck, that are dicks, that have attitude and that have a power trip. There was a psychological case study that was done back in the 70's where "x" amount of people volunteered to be prisoners and "x" amount of people were selected to be prison guards. The experiment went so bad because the guards became so power hungry and so filled with control. The experiment had to be stopped because of the mental and emotional stress it put upon everyone. What I am trying to get at is when you are given THAT much power you start to build up a "better than thou" attitude and because of that attitude citizens seem like they are jerks or idiots. Then you start to build up a "US vs THEM" mentality. Now you can start to say,"fuck them" or "they should not be cops" and so on and so forth. I agree but until you can put yourself in that position no one will understand what it is like.
I unnderstand why you got pulled over about the seat belt. I never wrote a ticket to anyone who had their belt on wrong, I would pull them over, pull up next to them and tell them, "hey you got it on wrong, fix it, thank you...". The people who deserved and got a ticket 100% of the time were those who didnt even make an effort to put their belt on at all. Especially when I saw 4 and 5 year old kids bouncing around in the back seat. Just plain stupid. Especially since there is a nationwide crackdown on proper seatbelt usage. On a personal note, I have seen two people go to the hospital wearing the seatbelt the way you did because they got into an accident and they belt in 1 case slicedunder the guys arm it looked like as knife cut him and the other person got 2 broken ribs from the force.
So yea, if things didnt go like you wanted them to or just they way they should have, file a complaint with the watch commander of on duty captain.

I used to hate cops. After all, it's the cool punk rock thing to do right?
However, my career has given me the opportunity to see the other side of the coin 1st hand. So, after several instances where the cops arrived on the scene and diffused situations that were about to get really ugly, I learned that cops are a lot like lawyers.

I am just going to drop my $0.02 cents here.
First off not all cops are dicks. Why is it fashionable to bash them? Because of their “position of authority”. A few bad seeds are in every profession. I guarantee we all bash our dick bosses also.
Now I am not a cop (don’t pretend to be), but some of my closest friends are. I also train some police officers in hand-to-hand combat and submission techniques a couple of times a week. So I get to talk with them a lot. I do know a little about procedures. First off if a cop pulls you over for speeding (failure to signal, no seat belt, etc…), you are under arrest! No ifs ands or buts about it. In that situation you are no better than a murderer, rapist, and car thief. Everyone under arrest is treated the same. Signing the ticket is a release of your arrest. Refuse to sign it and sees what happens. You should get a free one way ride in your cities black and white limo service. Don’t get me wrong, I know speeding is not the same as murder. Not even close. But an arrest is an arrest. And like I said earlier, if a cop pulls you over for speeding, you are technically under arrest. Can a cop search you car in that situation. I know in Texas they can’t unless there is probable cause (reeking of beer, pot, have your piece laying on the seat next to you). If they ask to search your ride, just say no. I know if you were alive during the Reagan Administration you know that line. Thanks, Nancy!!! Now if the officer wants to they can get a search warrant, so you might be sitting there for a while.
You may not think you are being a little bitch when the officer pulls you over, that really isn’t true. I have gone on civilian rides with some of my cop friends; and trust me, everyone was rude to them. I know when someone is being a smart ass to me I gladly return the favor. It’s human nature.
You also have to consider these people make around 30k a year to get shot at, deal with the scum of the earth, and bashed by unappreciative people (read this thread) for the few “bullies with a badge and a gun” that they might work with for is pretty crappy work. You might say why don’t they just quit. Most do after a few years. Hell, I get in a pissy mood dealing with the office dumb-ass, and I make way more than they do.

If these guys were pulling people over because they were bored, or just to fuck with them, and the people they were pulling over weren't known criminals, then they are far from cool, let alone Very cool. The only person you should be fucking with are the bad guys, not Joe Citizen.
The reason cops are intense during traffic stops is that more cops are killed during traffic stops than any other activity. YOU may know that you arren't going to shoot him, but he doesn't know that. The job is much more dangerous now than ever before, and the days of "Officer Friendly" are gone. You'd better get used to it.
They are only doing a job - one that most of you wouldn't want to do. When you get a ticket that you think is unjust, think back to all of the times you deserved one and didn't get it - you'll still be way ahead.
They just want to go home at night, like everyone else.

Even though I AM A COP, and I work in a shithole itsy bitsy town, the job is the same everyplace you go. Everytime I stop a car, I unhook my holster. When I see all is well, I hook it up, and I calmly talk to the violator. Noone even knows it was ready to come out if need be. It doesn't matter if you have stopped the same person 10 times in the past. It only takes one bad day to piss someone off, and then they decide they're gonna fuck somebody up just because they had a bad day. I don't care who you are, if you have never been on the cop side of the deal, you need to shut the hell up and let us do our job. Even though you were a guest at a hotel, and the officer did interogate you outside, just realize there IS a reason for everything we do. When it comes down to it, my goal is to go home to my family at the end of every shift, and I'm not gonna let some shithead stand in the way if I have any control over the matter. This is in NO way directed at any particular person. I agree, call the fire dept the next time someone does something to you and see how fast they come help out. Probably isn't gonna happen.

Hell if it makes you feel any better in '80 I got pulled over on 101 in San Bruno for following too close. I was in bumper to bumper traffic.
The cop comes up unbuckling his side arm and getting all surley. Then tells me I was following too close.
So I said "You're gonna shoot me for following too close?"
He started the lecture. About following too close that is.

Any conversation should at least start out polite and if it esculates from there then so be it.
If you don't want to have a problem that would cause you to have to protect yourself you shouldn't put on that posture to start with.

Wow, what minor infraction cost $1000? I pay a little over two hundred to have a speeding ticket fixed - I'm talking 95mph here - and that's it. No court costs, no insurance going up, nothing. $200 puts quite a dent in my monthly budget so I'm never stoked when I get a ticket but guess what? I don't think anyone was questioning the police's ability to do their job and the great job they do. I am more greatful than you could ever know for the police that helped save my sisters life this past year.
Steve is referring to a police department that has absolutely nothing more to do than pull people over for silly reasons to meet their ticket quota on memorial day weekend. Steve was wearing his seatbelt, not properly, but at the cops descretion he decided to ticket him regardless to meet his quota. He could have easily said "Wear your shoulder belt next time." Had to meet that quota.
I have been on ridealongs twice with the most notorious cop in the south bay, Officer Lopez. Thank god the guy liked me. There IS a quota on tickets believe it or not. Atleast in Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, and Palos Verdes California. I once got a ticket for window tint that was 100% legal. I had the ticket signed off the next day, and the other cop laughed and apologized for wasting my time. I also got a curfue ticket when I was 20 because I didn't have my ID on me walking down the street past 10pm. The judge was pretty damn pissed I was wasting his time when I showed up in court with an ID proving I was 20.
The cops do a great job regardless. But sometimes they CHOOSE to give tickets to good people for small infractions who would have been much better off with a slap on the wrist and "Have a nice day."

This post was pretty dumb from the beginning and I think dead E pretty much had it wrapped up...I don't know why I thought I needed to waste time arguing someone's opinion - their mind is obviously already made up.

I don't dislike cops, I live next door to a Sheriff Deputy and he's ok. (Only a bit weird, and I haven't quite figured out what his statement "I don't trust women" means. He just moved in a couple months ago and he works ALL the time, so I don't know him much.)
And Wife's Uncle/godfather is FBI, retired, and he's, well he's family...
And the guy who runs a lot of the "cruise nights" around here is a Sheriff Lieutenant, and a great friend (He doesn't like flame throwers by the way.)
I just know all cops have guns and the report writing skills to get away with using them, and I can't tell until after the fact which one's are among the many good cops, and which one is one of the few bad ones.
It only takes one bad one for me to be dead.
So, I FEAR cops.
I fear their ability and facility to do me bodily harm and most likely get away with it.
I fear the bad cop's ability to search me or my car or house using the "without due cause" clause that functionally nullifies all of our so-called rights, and come up with "drugs" that were in reality in his own pocket.
Can't happen?
Like hell it can't.
I am convinced that OJ got away with murder as a result of a cop planting bloody-gloves and other "evidence."
Just that time the jury didn't buy it.
I think the biggest problem is there are just too damn many things that are illegal that shouldn't be.
They should toss out ALL the "victimless crime" laws.
Get rid of all the so called vice and drug laws.
That would put the "criminal" drug dealers out of business (because they wouldn't be criminals any more) and cut down on murder and theft because shit wouldn't cost so much.
You never heard of a "Weber's Bread crime syndicate" did you?
There shouldn't be speed limit laws, just following too close and unsafe lane change laws that are inforced. what are now speed limits should be speed suggestions, like the yellow 25 signes on the freeway offramps that you follow if you're driving a top heavy 4x4 but are just silly-slow in a good handling sports car.
There was a 35 mph speed limit here in LB that EVERYONE speeded at about 45 on. so what did they do? They LOWERED it to 30 mph! People still do 45 mph, they just get bigger tickets... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I appreciate the job that The Police do in keeping us safe. I have no complaints with how I have been treated in the past.
I have however (speaking to Los Angeles Only), seen many a Traffic Unit pass up stranded motorists on the side of the 405 while patroling for things like car pool lane violators... I guess for some officers it's more fun to write tickets (impose authority) than actually help people... These are the people I have a problem with...

I always try to give police officers the benifit of the doubt. I know that their job deals with nothing but negativity all day, every day. My father is a retired police officer, and I have quite a few other family members and friends that are now in the force. My father will also be the first to tell you that (for the most part) police today seem to have this "John Wayne" syndrome, and really just act like jerks. Not sure why, but some people when given a little power seem to think that they can abuse it. I have been pulled over many times for "harrasment" issues. Mainly when driving a car that does not FIT my parents neighborhood while visiting them. Never get any tickets, due to the fact that no violations are ever broken. I have even had to carry a copy of the Texas Peinal code on my front seat just to prove that I am not violating laws. But no matter, police now a days (again, not all but a lot) seem to have a chip on their shoulder. Call it terroristic fear, or boredom, it still does not qualify the attitude.
Ain't about the uniform its about the person IN the uniform. I respect cops, several including the sherriff and the police chief are customers of my store, and my brother in law is a sherriff's deputy. They're nice guys. However we have an "occifer" that's a jerk. He's such a jerk he pulled over the sherriff (who was in his personal vehicle but HAD HIS UNIFORM ON!) and tried to give him a ticket for doing 4mph over the limit.
The officer ticketed my co-worker for having an "invalid" license, simply because it is out of state. Perfectly valid and legal, but out of state. Judge threw that one out.
One of our neighbors is a cop, and he's a jerk too. He's been trying to catch me running around town in my car, because I recently "modified" the exhaust and now it's very loud. I'm sure he's gonna give me a fixit ticket as soon as he sees me driving it in town. That's the type of person he is.
I understand that you can catch a guy on a bad day. That happens. But if the cop is a natural born jerk, you're gonna get a BS ticket most of the time.

I was pulled over Monday morning on my way to work. It was a Round Rock policeman. They are known around here to be real tough. I saw him as I passed by going just under 80. The cop unlatched his holster as he walked up, and said "I'm Officer Jess Soandso of the Round Rock Police Dept., can I see your license and registration" When I gave it to him he said "I pulled you over because I clocked you going 77 in a 65mph. zone" I explained that I was late for a meeting, that I realized that was not a good excuse, and appologized for driving so fast. He went to his patrol car and ran my license. I'm guessing because of my clean record, he came back and said "Please slow down and drive safe" NO TICKET. He also gave me his business card. The whole time he was stern but not rude. He wasn't "nice", but extremely professional.
I guess I'm just lucky. The only time I've had bad run in's with the police are when I pretty much deserved them.
And to the officers on the board, should I send a "good" letter to this guys superior? I don't know how warnings are looked at. I don't want him to get in trouble for not giving me a ticket.
And to the guys complaining, how would you do your job differently if you knew your next customer or contact might shoot you?

Okay, good point. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
True Story - I'll try to shorten it as best I can...
I had a foot patrol beat by the University of Cincinnati, several blocks of upscale restaurants and bars, as well as a hangout for punkers, ass't dregs, and low-lifes, and college kids. Parking was a premium, and I enforced the meters, telling the meter maid to let me handle it there.
One day, I turn a corner, and there sits a Turbo Porsche, Resale Red, whaletail gleaming in the sunlight. And an expired meter. I check the meter to see if there is money that hasn't been deposited yet - nope. So I look at the car, walking around it, to give the owner time to see me and put a dime in the meter. After about 5 minutes, I get my book out and start to write a $7.00 meter violation. I'm about halfway through when a guy in a $1000.00 suit, nice manicure and cut, and impeccable shoe shine yells - " What are you doing? I only went in to get change less than a minute ago."
I've got his license number on the ticket, so there's nothing I can do about it now, and I tell him "Sorry, but it's too late. But you've paid for the spot for the day, so don't put any money in the meter." Then he starts...
"You do this for a living?"
"Yes sir, I do." Finishing the ticket, I place it on his windshield.
"Does your MOTHER know what you do for a living?"
Boing! "May I see your driver's license sir?"
"Why?"
"Because I like to know whom I'm talking to."
Shows me his license, and there are no wants on him. BUT, there are unpaid tickets on the license plates on the Porsche, proving that there is a God. I call a wrecker to tow it to the impound lot. I instruct him to go downtown, pay the tickets, and he can have his car back in an hour or so.
Well, turns out that the plates are for a DIFFERENT Porsche, and THIS one is a rebuild from a total, and he has NO paperwork for it. NONE. And oh yeah - he lives in Lexington Ky. It takes him 3 MONTHS to get the paperwork in order, including paying taxes on the car to get it back.
When He shows up at the impound lot, he fills out the info and hands the officer the paperwork to get the car back. The officer looks at the paperwork, looks at the guy, and says, "Does your mother know what you do for a living?"
He mumbled, "I deserve that", got in the car and left.
Next time I saw him he was backing out of a one-way street the wrong way , but that's another story...
For every cop that's a dick, there are thousands of civilians that are dicks. You don't get to meet them, but the cops do.

Buzzard - By all means send a letter to the Chief complimenting the officer. You don't have to go into detail, just relate the guy's bearing, attitude, etc. and that the contact was a positive experience for you. Not enough people bother to do that.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the way cops never use their blinker, speed for no known reason (maybe it's time to go home?) Roll thru stop signs, talk on their cell phones.
I am in a city of around 7,000 people, with the state, county and local police having a total of about 65 on the road! I see it a lot!!!

I see both sides of the coin. In the broad spectrum...in any group, there is going to be a percentage of assholes. Mechanics, lawyers, accountants, police officers, etc.
If I do something wrong (typically speeding), I know I'm wrong. If I get a break, cool...if not, then I deserved it. I treat an officer as he treats me. If he comes off as a dick right from the get-go...I give it back. More often than not, they're pretty calm and collected.
I've never been hassled for no apparent reason so I can't relate too much on that point.

The AVIATOR glasses are cool though... or NOT.
I've always heard that cops in the U.K. are cool. Any U.K. guys lend a tale to support or refute this? I heard that they don't carry guns.
It's not very sunny over there, so they probably don't HAVE to wear AVIATORS. Damn sun.

Generally I just like to read these without responding much because everyone is entitled to their oppinion. This is not directed at any responses here, just something to ponder. I've been a Sheriff's Deputy for over 13 years, worked some real shitty areas (still do) including our gang unit and I teach defensive tactics. I think one of the most overlooked things is this...do you know what the officer just got done doing before he talked to you? I can't count the number of times if just been on a really shitty call and got sent to some bullshit call with some guy who is pissed because his neighbors cat shit in his yard. Now imagine just dealing with a fatal accident where you helped pick up pieces of a 17 year old driver and then go deal with this dumbass? Kind of makes their problem insignificant doesn't it? I'm not making excuses for someone being a dick...it's never right.
But just think about that because a lot of times thats what happens. Now as far as the saftey issue goes (backups), please understand we never know WHO you are or WHAT you have been doing. An officer I know was almost killed by a guy 14 years ago who he had stopped several times for the same small stuff. Turns out he had a bad fight with the wife and had been drinking all day and said to other patrons in the bar he would kill any cop who got in his way. Well he almost did...the officer was on his back on the ground having his head pounded on the pavement by the guy and was almost to blacking out when the guy started trying to get his gun. Luckilly the officer was a lefty and he managed to get it first and killed the guy. Justified shooting. Folks this happened in a town of 700 people when stopped for a minor traffic violation. Like I said...please just think of it from our side, I want to come home to my kids everynight.

Got pulled over once. I had a warrent for my arrest. The officer asked me "Give me one good reason why I should not haul you to jail tonite" I told him I could not think of any reason. It's your job and you have to do your job. I can't give you a good reason. After I told him what the warent was for.....he let me go home.
Another time I was a passanger in a friends car. We got pulled over and all my friends were scared. He asked us a question....none of them answered and I played dumb by answering his questions. He took me out of the car and beat the shit out of me royally!!! put me in the car and said I learned my leason tonite.and sent me home.
A year later the FBI called me and was investigating him. Guess he beat up one to many people....and they guy was in serious condition in the hospital. Im guessing that cop is no longer a cop.
Just like there are assholes on the HAMB and cool people...........the same goes with the force.

Guess I've seen both sides. I got speeding tickets in the late 60's for refusing to allow police to search my car for drugs. I didn't do drugs, but I didn't put up with harrasment either. I've had 2 cops pull shotguns on me. 1 for failing to signal pulling into a store parking lot. They treated it like a felony drug bust. I was in high school and the girl I was dating's ex boyfriend was a narc. The asshole narc set me up.
The second time was when I was in my early 20's on the freeway by Oakland. I was riding a 350 Yamaha with no shirt, a pair of shorts, sneakers and no socks. I was doing 5 mph over the limit and thought I was going to get a speeding ticket. Nope, after being handcuffed in the back of the police car for about 15 minutes the word came over the radio that I was infact the sailor stationed at Vallejo that I said I was and wasn't the head of the Hells Angels like they apparently thought. They let me go with a warning to keep up with traffic or next time they'd arrest me as a traffic hazzard. I really don't think they needed a shotgun and pistol aimed at me, a pat down search on the ground, handcuffs in the back of the police car to tell me to speed up.
On the other side of the coin, I was in the Armed Forces Police. I've had a guy lunge out of his car at me with a 12 inch knife because I pulled him over and I took the gun out of the hand of another citizen who pulled it and tried to shoot me as I approached the door of his car. I broke that guy's wrist and trigger finger. In both of these stops, I never had a chance to say anything before they pulled their shit. The first guy blew thru a roadblock we set up because of an accident. The second guy was trailing oil from a pan plug that had come out. Guess he figured I was an asshole pulling him over for no reason.
I'll side with what was said above. If you haven't been a cop, you have no idea what they deal with. They deal with dirtbags and drunks every day, and they also have to deal with the bodies at those wrecks you gawk at as you drive by. That shit changes you if you deal with it long enough. Cut them some slack. If they're assholes, turn them in, but try to understand their side.

You are an ignorant man. This is a friend of mine that was shot and killed about three years ago. I stood in the Honor Guard at his funeral. you CAN'T really win a seatbelt ticket here in california (still can't belive they can MAKE us wear seat belts and helmets). my solution is to get a car/truck that was too old to have them, the law here is if it didn't come with it from the factory then you don't have to have it. no seat belts, 1 tail light, no safety glass..........

being "too low" and "not wearing your seatbelt properly" are both ticket able offences. if you want to fuck with the cops in your area do it legally. here is so cal (and nor cal) spend the 2 bux and buy a vehicle code book (sometimes you can get the previous years for free) at the d.m.v. i used to live in newport beach and would get pulled over EVERY night after work (11pm 5 days a week for a 8 months). most of the time by the same cops, i didn't get pissed, i just thought it was sad. at one time my refrig was covered (both sides and front) from about 2 years worth of tickets, almost all were "fix it" tickets (back then they didn't cost anything). i deserved everyone of those "no front plate" tickets.
my 67 ford doesn't have shoulder belts, only laps, and yes I do wear it even though it will probably get me cut in half if I ever rearend anyone. I'm waiting to get pulled over for no belt, but thankfully the cops seem to get that older cars don't have them.
One time some jackass in front of us (my girlfriend's little ranger) locked up solid, and we did, and we got rearended hard. The poor guy behind us got rearended next. We were all nevous wrecks, and the lady cop that showed up on the scene was absolutely top of the line. Has the situation under control, was kind and collected, and we all thanked her personally for her help. Good attitude can really defuse a nervous situation.
Odd side story: While we were getting everything out of the way, a young couple comes flying up to us, I thought we were going to get hit. They jump out, and have a baby that's not breathing, and can't find a hospital. The police had a ambulance there nothing flat. Gotta kind of wonder about how things turn out...

Anywhere around LAX is tough, too.
Redondo, Hermosa, Manhattan Beach... always been fine. The cops there seem WAY more laid back... 'Course i prettymuch just stick to Pier ave in Hermosa... cant get a bullshit ticket between Hennesseys and the Light House...

Here, I can make this more on-topic--or at least car-guy-informative.
TECH POST: How to get out of a ticket
I'm 33, and since 16 years old I've been pulled over more than 60 times for everything from headlights to speeding to drag racing, expired tags, un-lit tag, headlights, tail lights, fit a profile of someone they were looking for, wrong way on a one-way, etc. etc. etc. I got one ticket at 16 (stop sign) and one at 17 (driving too fast in a parking lot chasing girls). Since then, no tickets--except one for no brake lights on my '54 Buick, and even though I was using hand signals and told the cop the switch was ordered, had my pre-schooler in the back seat and it was two-days before Christmas, he gave me the fixit. Have had up to four cars pull me over at the same time, and I'm positive one of the cops on some of my two-cop stops have had hands on their gun. Given all that, the one I probably didn't deserve (Buick) is more than fair for all those I richly deserved.
When they pull up behind you, wave that you see them, and then pull off on the first side street, into a parking lot, or way, way off the shoulder so he isn't dodging traffic when he walks up to your car.
Turn off your car, turn on your dome light (at night) open your window before he gets there, and if you have power windows, open all the other windows on the car so his partner (coming up on your blind side) can clearly see inside your vehicle.
Slowly extend both hands out your window so he sees them before he gets to you, and keep them there until he gets to your car. Then put both hands on top of your steering wheel. If you've got passengers, tell them to put their hands in plain sight (out window, on dash, on back of front seat for rear passengers, etc)
When he asks for your liscense and reg, tell him where both documents are, and tell him when you're reaching for them ("my liscense is in my wallet in my right front pocket, my registration is in the glovebox--I'm going to reach for my wallet now" and then "I'm going to go into my glovebox for my registration" and keep your un-used hand on the steering wheel.
By this point, the cop is always more relaxed, knows you're aware that they don't like any fast movements, are going out of your way to let them be in control of the situation, etc. and after running your info will usually come back and tell you that you shouldn't be speeding, shouldn't have out-of-state plates that were expired by two years (it was a game to me by that point), shouldn't be drag racing, shouldn't be driving without registration, shouldn't be drag racing with expired plates and no registration, where the next speed traps are down the road so don't speed past them, etc.........
And this is bound to piss off a lot of people, but if they pull you over and you look like the guys that are always wearing the handcuffs on COPS, their first impression of you is already off to a rough start (But even with long hair, ripped jeans, concert T-shirts and a friend who always sported a black trenchcoat, I got out of tickets all the way through college with what I wrote).
This has worked on Ohio Highway Patrol, city and county sherrifs and cops (and in towns known for no warnings) Michigan, Pennsylvania Troopers, Indiana Troopers, Wisconsin police, Florida state, city and counties, Georgia police, in big cities (Tampa, Toledo, Detroit) and small towns.

Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion. I KNOW that having a gun and a badge does not make me any better than anyone else. I also know that what I do is a JOB, and I do my job well. I don't normally write seatbelt tickets. I will however, write someone a ticket for not putting a small child in a safety seat.
PETEJOE...I have nothing against any firemen. My point was that they have a different job than the police, and that job is not to write tickets or make arrests, or chase down someone that has burglarized a home or assaulted a family member.
I work with a few officers that don't cut anyone any slack EVER. I don't agree with the way they do things, but as long as they don't cross over any legal boundaries, I can't say anything about how they do their job. We aren't taught to treat people with disrespect. Some officers just take upon themselves to be that way. I knew when I took this job, that I would be disliked by many people, and looked down at because of what I do. People think that it's the the duty of the police to just write tickets. People don't ever think about how we spend all night looking for someone's child that didn't come home, or hunt down the dirty bastard that violated someone's son/daughter. Sorry, I'm done with this post

Lots of cops on this board.A large part of any problem is what their boss will let them get away with. Back to cars please. Thank You..

FUCK...
Ever had a GUN pointed at you for having a MOHAWK...??? I have...
Got 3 tickets for SPEEDING 2x the limit, in a fucking RAMBLER... REALLY NOW... 70 in a 35, in a Rambler...??? Fucking retarded... That car can barely do 70 on a downhill highway with a tail-wind... I was going UNDER the limit... fucking cum-dumpster asshole fascists......
Keep in mind, no matter how much a cop lies in court, the judge will believe HIM and NOT YOU... After all, he is a township employee with a gun and a badge, and you are just a scum-fuck taxpayer that pays everyone's salary...
BY THE WAY, not ALL cops are bad... I've met some very nice ones actually... The guy who arrested me was cool as fuck... We talked WWII for like 45 minutes...
BUT, my luck dictates that I run into the ASSHOLES every time I get pulled over...
Saravello and Morehead can eat my shit.........

Another thing that pisses me off is when you get pulled over, the cop takes your license and registration, everything is cool, then 5 minutes later ANOTHER cop shows up, like the first guy needs backup or something??? Yeah, I'm gonna kill the first guy because he caught me speeding.
[/ QUOTE ] A couple of years ago in Mahattan Beach,an upper class town, on Christmas eve, a cop with his nephew in tow stoped a car for speeding. He was shot and killed.
