ok, the stock 3 speed vacume assist trans in the 47 Chevy has got to go! what will fit in it's place?? i am not afraid to swap rear ends and put in a real driveshaft either. i know an S10 rear will fit but what about an S10 5 speed tranny??? i had a friend put one behind a 283 in a 55 Chevy wagon once, held up great, worked great. seems he had to elongate a couple holes and use the V8 stick bellhousing, but is my 235 the same trans bolt pattern as your typical small block Chevy?? any helpfull info from someone who maybe tried such a swap would be great.

...also, anybody got an S10 5 speed layin around???

thanks

Talk to Kustm52...I think he's done the "235 backed by S10 5-speed" thang...he may even have the stuff you need to pull it off, Kelso!!!

A guy at work was talkin about S-10 T5 trans for $50. I will ask when I see him tommorrow. (thought the S-10 you had was a 2.5L w/5 speed? guess you don't have it any more huh?) Anyways I'll let you know.

The 5 speed has to be from a V6 truck according to the pamplet Brian made up for all us. Thats something to keep in mind when you go looking for parts.

you will need a bellhousing from a 55 to 62, as the pre 55 bellhousing bolt pattern for the gearbox is completely different.

Check out the tech section on www.inliners.org (http://www.inliners.org) as ssome good info relating to this same swap appears there.

I bolted an S-10 5spd. to my '54 truck bellhousing with only very minor mods to the trans.
Works great.

I finally got mine all figured out and working.
The truck is a 51 chevy 1/2ton
Engine/bellhousing '55 235
Tranny is '82 s-10 2.5L
Flywheel 6 volt foot start
Clutch disc is '83 s-10 v6P
Pressure plate/throw out bearing 55 chevy
Driveshaft 85 astrovan
Rearend 69 chevy 1/2ton

It was a really straightforward swap once everything was figured out. I had to drill the metric mounting holes in the trans out to 1/2", and shim the trans 1/8" to prevent the input shaft from contacting the flywheel. The driveshaft was the perfect length, I used the rearend because it was free, and found a conversion u-joint from spicer don't remember the part number off hand, but I have heard a 54ish rear end has the proper yoke for the astrovan sized u-joint.
