Do you guys know if all ford banjos 36-42 are the same, or have the same dimensions? We''re mocking up a chassis and I have a 36 banjo, but might be using a 40 banjo for convenience? Also, are the axel housings the same length 1936 and 1940? I have the green bible, but it's not helping with measurements and such.

Actually, the one that we will be mocking it up with is a Model A banjo.
Are Model A banjos the same as '36's???

That I don't think so, I thought it was a 40? Ok, are 36 and model A banjo's the same?
Bruce should answer this. I will try for now. The A banjo and 32-34 banjos are narrower than the later ones. The A's and 32's are weaker because they lack the extra bearing on the pinion snout. The 35-40 banjo housings are the same width and I THINK take the same axles. the 35-36 banjos have pinions with 10 splines verses the 6 splines of the later rears. I will know more later because I have a bunch of parts that I will try to make into a rear for my coupe.

Definitely not the same. But that's all I know for sure. I'm headed home for the day - I have a Model A banjo And a '48 Banjo sitting at home so I can take pretty much any measurement you want from either...but I have no '36 to measure. Sorry.

'35-48 same, late '32-34 same, has minor differnces from later, '28-32 same, has no rear bearing on pinion.
'35-48 have two different varieties of spider gears and axle gears, several different axles. 1928-1941 are all very close in width, 1942-48 are somewhat wider.

Spring mounts over the axles on an A and behind it on the later ones. That means the crossmember has to be different to keep the wheels in the fenderwells. There are differences in axle widths too.

We just need something to hold his axle tubes in place while we mock the whole thing up... I think he should just send the banjo that he pulled the axle tubes out via UPS... it may cost $15 to UPS it... but at least we'll have all the correct parts for the mock up (TM).

Green bible says 32-34 axle lenght 32.18
35-38 " " 32.85 w/ 18 teeth
39-41 " " 32.85 w/ 16 "
42-48 " " 33.70 w/ 16 "
This is one axle length only.

Sam, that would be the safest way. You will not be able to bolt the Model A banjo to the '36 axel bells....and even if you could, the model a center section is narrower and would throw you off.

Now only if we could get Strube bro #1 to show up and WORK. He's too much of a company man to take a day off... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hahahaha... I never thought of THAT! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Most of the parts are out here already... the rear axle isn't though... and he's going to fly out on the 14th and we'll build it in a week. Then we're going to ship it back to Chi-town.

Holy Christ are you serious? How about a three day layover in KC to finish my pile? It's close but I'm running a bit low on time and raw determination right now. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hahahaha... that's a good one Grimmy! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
We're just going to try to get the rolling chassis done in a week. The only hold up right now is a dropped front axle...

And to add to the questions, are Open driveshaft truck banjo's stronger than the car models? Can a truck banjo handle 250HP?
