I am having the worst time trying to solve a axle seal problem. I've asked several forums where it is more appropriate since this is in a '67 gto, but I get 4 different answers from 4 "experts" and they are all different. Here's the deal...
This axle is in a '67 gto, but probably not the original. There's a chance it's from a '69 GP.
My axle seal was leaking. Looked at it and found the retainer plate was bent. Took it off and found that the seal (an inner type) casing was ground up and the bearing was not seated in the housing all the way. It had like 1/2 of side-to-side movement. I assumed the housing was not made for an inner seal and got an axle from Flat-Top that had the machined area for the outer type seal.
The axle that was in it slides right in, no problem till the bearing hits the inner seal. The new axle won't mesh with the splines even though they are both 28 spline axles and every measurement I take seems to be very very close if not exactly the same. It acts as if the splines are cut too shallow on the new axle. Anyone ever seen this?
Further more I don't know if I have a 8.2 rear or an 8.5 and then I don't know what PN for bearings I need or what seal it should have. Most people agree it's an 8.2, but they seem to use the inner type seal, and I can't get that to fit in the housing
I'm losing my patience with this thing. I've spent 3 days on it now just trying to get it back on it's feet again.
Here's some pictures of the axle, housing and seal that didn't fit on this site:
