View Full Version : tech or update? windshield frame
got a couple hours in on the modified yesterday and today,
pieced together a frame out of the '24? Chevy frame I picked up in Monroe.
made one tall glass in place of the two separate pieces.
started with this
it is a few inches narrower and has a more pronounced arc to the bottom than the Ford
so I took it all apart,
breaking the PLATE glass in the process
made a pattern for some new mounting plates
cut two pieces of 3/16" plate
bent them to fit the body and smoothed them up
bolted them in place using the stock mounting holes
and trimmed the mounting flanges off the Chevy sanctions
and used the bottom bolt to attach it to the body too
squared it up and took a measurement or two
cut a chunk out of it and welded it back together
cut the glass frames into a whole lotta pieces
and started welding It all back together
slowly worked it with heat to follow the curve of the dash
repeted on the other side
filled the gap in the middle with a chunk from the top
gradualy working towards a halfway decent contour,
and rolled it outside to check the overall look..
and there ya have it..

Nice!
Uhm....whatcha' doin' with the bedframe??
Gonna put a Hemi in it for the Hamb drags?
Okay, seriously....This is a great post.
I'm starting to visualize shit with channel and square tubing.
Thanks for a great post.
That thing is coming out great!
The windshield has the right proportions to it, fits the car perfect!
Nice job.
I'm not making a scenester rat rod,
just a fun little scrapper.
so far aside from the steering wheel there is nothing newer then the '61 motor and trans.
the rest is all twenties, thirties and forties stuff with a couple fifties things thrown in.

I've always liked you coupe, but this little bomb is winning my heart. I think it's turning out great and I'm betting your going to have a blast when it's finished. Thanks for sharing the build with us with text and pictures. I can't help but think you must have given the younger guys a lot of guidance and inspiration to tackle a project of their own. When you break a project like this down into segments it shows newer guys that a project can be brought to fruition if you take it one step at a time and don't loose your focus.
Can't wait to see it leaving two black marks on your driveway on it's way out for the maiden voyage.

I was going to go searching for a T windshield, now I have an idea for something much better. I love your posts.
Does the name Don Stuernagel ring a bell with you? He is from Fife, WA.

Great job Paul, that Lil' RPU is gonna be fun. It really is amazing what little time you have in that thing. Should be tearing up the streets soon...
a brief update,
today I got the stantions almost ready for paint.
here's one welded to a base plate
switched to a sanding disc on the little grinder
blast 'em and hit 'em with the DA
couple small divots that could be welded and metal finished for chrome prep,
but they're close enough for paint!

The frame itself may need a little more surgery
but definitely lots of gentle persuasion,
it’s formed of very thin material and is a challenge to manipulate..

cold, with a BFH and a chunk of railroad iron.
basicly it's;
pound, check fit, pound, check fit, pound, check fit, pound, check fit...
I first tried bending it with the hydrolic press and a checking with a pattern,
it bent easily but was easier and faster to get a better fit using the ball peen.
