View Full Version : 216 Chevy Troubles

I drove my car for a a good half the car ran great and then all of the sudden...it just dies. I can restart the car and it runs but as soon as its in gear and I try to move it dies again. IS just that this 216 inline 6 sucks ass, and will always have trouble here? I know for a fact that i have a full tank of gas, so there wasn't any question about no gas there. My fuel filter isn't clogged, my fuel pump is clean, just rebuilt it. Could it be vapor locking on me, has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone have any suggestions about what to do to "solve" this?

Check your points, under a load they could be takin a dump, sometimes points will act like fuel problems.

You need to remove and clean the TANK.?

What makes you think it "sucks ass"? Can't be that bad, MILLIONS of Chevrolets ran MILLIONS of miles with them, including semi trucks, so the engine can't be that bad. Check the obvious stuff, the engine only needs three things to go, air, fuel and spark. Start with one, eliminate till you find the problem.

I second that. I've got a 216 in my 51 that will be running along fine and then it just dies. Never misses or acts up in anyway. Just dies. It's the points. Sometimes it does just what you described. Sometimes it won't start back at all. I'll jump out and file the points or throw in a spare set I carry with me. (You should always carry a spare set of points and a extra condenser) Then fire it up and take off again.

So I checked the points gap...it was about .035-.040 so the spark it was getting was very weak, I checked on the net and found the specs. and they are .018-.022, adjusted the gap. Man runs great for now. Thanks for the advice all.
