This morning my mom and I met up with Tman and his friend Floyd at the entrance to the Crazy Horse Memorial in Custer South Dakota. We met up with Ruth, the wife of the late memorial carver, and gave her our donation. She was a very nice woman and seemed very very pleased with what we did http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif They all treated us wonderfully http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif The 4 of us got to go in a van up to the memorial itself. What a great experience!
Again, all you HAMBers are awesome - we did a great thing as a group, and helped out a great cause http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Jerry would be proud!!

Yes, it was very cool. As we stood on top though, I couldnt help but think that Jerry was the one that should have been there and not us.
We have had marriages, graduations, divorces here on the HAMB but Jerry was the first one that had to leave us. The money you all graciously gave goes to a good cause that Jerry believed in, preserving the heritage and culture of the first Americans.

I know - it's absolutely amazing. It's quite a bit smaller than Mt. Rushmore believe it or not. Wonderful people working there too. Truly an experience I'll never forget.
Reminds me of an old John Buttera quote, I will paraphrase........."You just carve away everything that does not look like the end product"
Take a look at that website I posted above, Korczak's dream will make the pyramids look like tinker toys!

yeah, they won't even roughly estimate when it could be done...depends on funding and weather...but 7 of their 10 kids are completely involved, and will be til they die. The workers are out there 5 days a week, full time. So its defenitely getting "done".

I dont know what homestead you mean, but like 5 years ago when I was down there we went on this tour of the crazy horse monument and there happened to be a hudson car club with us on the bus and they got all excited cause there was a hudson sittin (or what was left of it anyway) in tall grass out a way from the work site. Is that what you mean?

So how do they know what Crazy Horse looked like? I didn't think they had any pictures of him...

go to www.crazyhorse.org (http://www.crazyhorse.org) and search thru it...it explains it all http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Briggs, thats actually an old Mopar, 1929 that was sitting in the weeds.
Yes, the FACE is smaller that Mt Rushmore as a whole but when the head is done, it will be larger than Mt Rushmore as a whole.
Crazy Horse was well documented, he fought at the Little Big Horn.
Of the origional warriors that fought with him were involved with Korczak from the beginning back in 1939.

how long have they been building this thing???? and how long did it take to do MNT Rushmore???
Mt Rushmore took 14 years and used Federal money and a huge crew. This has been going since about 1939 with only Korczak working on it alone for the first few years. It is all being done with private donations. Thats why Jerry wish is so important.

.........the Black Hills are VERY sacred to the Lakota people. Carving the faces of dead presidents into THEIR land was the ultimate insult. The Crazy Horse monument is much more than a tribute to one man, Crazy Horse. It is also a monument to the original "caretakers" of this land. The fact that Jerry wished to honor this speaks even more about the quality person he must have been. With this project, the Crazy Horse monument will now, not only honor the Lakota people, it will be a lasting momerial to Jerry! Thanks to EVERYONE involved......... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Journey well Jerry........
