59AB Valve Adjustment Help

Hey All,

This is my first post to the HAMB, though I've been lurking for quite a while. I recently picked up a 41 Ford Pickup that I knew would need some love.

The motor definitely has a knocking sound. Sounds a little like a diesel. There is no exhaust leak to be found, just had that looked at on the lift this morning at the muffler shop.

I'm also noticing what I think is water coming out the engine breather tube. Scary.

My diagnosis is that an exhaust valve is either burned or in need of a serious adjustment.

I live in Berkeley, CA. Anyone on the HAMB know of a shop that does valve jobs on flatheads in this area? I could do the work, but I would not have time before Paso, and I'd like to get the truck there. Heck, I may just run it as is and deal with the consequences later.

i was gonna suggest a shop before i saw paso thats like 3 days away you realize????? most shops that even know what a flattie looks like would be booked for weeks, you might find one somewhere ...maybe goodluck....

I'm guessing that you dont know much about flatheads? might be worth looking on the techno link on the MSN flathead msg board, as they discuss these things.

However once you bust a flatty open, its bound to cost you $$$ enjoy!

worth doing some more research, and get someone who knows the motors to listen to it first, just incase you can save your self a headache

Yeah, I know that finding someone to do the job in 3 days is pretty unrealistic, but what the heck, I thought I'd ask. Please send me your suggestions if you have them.

Before we cut you into small parts, i would suggest you do a compression check. water is not good. could have a cracked block, but not all is lost. block sealer works great. do your home work first before taking apart.

Yep, tomorrow is compression test day. Got my remote starter switch and compression gauge in hand. Gonna have a good look at each plug also.

I've been checking my radiator level every day for a week, and its not going down. This makes me think its exhaust blow by. There's no green in the water I see either. It'll get figured out.
