how much travel does a rear axle need?
right now, i have about 2 3/4 inches till it hits metal and 2.5 where i have the bumpstops.
this is on my 66 f-100, i put the rear axle on top of the springs.
I do not have the front clip on, or the engine in. i know it will settle some so i wanted to ask you guys.
So... how much is enough?

I ended up just replacing the whole rear half of the frame, I didnt really think it'd be enough travel, and the stock frame is sooo small there. Built outta 2x3 tubing, with a 4" (added another piece of 2x3 over the notch) notch out of it. Lotsa travel room now.

I drove my panel around for 3 months with the rear end resting on the frame, no travel at all, just to get the stance I wanted. It's all about how low you want the truck to sit and how much modification you are willing to do. Spring tension and shocks play a big roll in how much travel you will need. Stiff springs need less travel that soft springs. Etc. Hope this helps. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I would think you would need somewhere around 4-5", kinda depending on the roads you drive on.

3 Inches is a basic rule used by most rod builders.
But I always say if it doesn't bump, rub,or scrape,it's probably not low enough. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Resting on the bump-stop rubbers sounds ok..
But its no pleasure doin it on the front, gives ya kinda bumpsteer feeling... And please dont ask how i know.. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

im gonna go ahead and notch her out i think it might settle too much, and if the rear end isnt low enough, the 2" blocks would make it too close
thanks guys
