Im new to the world of inline sixes. Ive always gone the safe route 283s 327s 389s . With the price of gas the way it keeps going here in the west, cant afford to drive. What year is the best 235 to rebuild? I heard something about the oil pressure and the way it is distributed? After 62? the speed stuff doesnt fit? Any info. Thanks Chaco

'55 - '62, take your pic. Find a head with 848 as the last digits of the casting number, that is the best stock head. Other than that, engines of this year range are pretty much the same, other that solid or hydraulic lifters. I've got over 50k miles on mine, gets about 22 mpg....that's with two rochesters on an Edelbrock intake. Would you believe ading the 2 x 1 intake actually increased the mileage?

no answer to the poster just relating something along the lines of increased gas mileage with that other carb
me and my dad for a couple years fought (discussed!) them six bangers, he was all for a 6 any make or kind cause they got "good mileage" well I figured I had to have me a sbc in my 57 chevy truck and was currently using a 261 out of a 1960 pontiac all stock and seemed to have to keep my foot to the floor, my arguement was with a sbc I wouldn't need to keep my foot to the floor to get it down the road and achieve cruising speed in less time than some simpy new late 70's imports at the time, my first paycheque after getting out of school I couldn't get it cashed fast enough to haul on down to the junkyard and acquire a covetted sbc!
I got a 327 for 200.00 then had to purchase a bellhousing, throttle linkage, etc to make the swap complete
I never even made it to my next payday when I was now in need of another 3 speed after stripping out first gear, well the expenses just kept piling up due to my quest for speed and power!!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif all in all I figure I got better gas mileage when driving civilized ( either due to having a regular job or I finally didn't have to keep syphoning the gas out of dads dear old dads willys Jeep truck http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif) BUT I sunk a treeemendous amount of money into repairs not to mention fines for various indiscretions
me and my younger brother made several attempts after dooling over pages and pages of my uncles old hotrod magazines to try and cut up old chevy 6 banger manifolds to get duel exhaust and at least 2 of the stromberg carbs we kept seeing and dreaming about, but we lacked skill, talent and cash money......
