View Full Version : Stabbed in the Leg!

I'm running an early toploader in my r-p/u. Found an NOS Hurst shift linkage kit, which mounts nice and solid, but it puts the shifter right up under my leg. Now I could heat and bend a new shift lever to center it -- or fab up a spacer to move it over (about 3 inches) -- but I'm wondering if there are other ways to handle this...?

#1 Sit closer to the door.
#2 Widen the cab.
#3 Bend the lever over to the right at the base and just let it come up at an angle instead of putting an "S" in it and makin it too short... you'll get used to it http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
#4 You already answered your own question I think...Just do what it needs to function.

Just modify or make the handle to go where you want it.

slide the seat over to the middle and hold the stick between your legs.

you know, like a single seat modified!

Don't use that shifter. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Actually I'm not sure I follow you here. IF its a early Toploader, why is the shifter now on the side and to the left.

Or are you talking about using a 40and up side shift box?

then I would still say use the early topload/topshift box and life will be good http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Go RHD, life is much more fun if you are driving on the wrong side of the car http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hey Rudy -- it's a toploader out of an early Mustang-Falcon. Has the same narrow bolt pattern as a 50's era three speed. The shifter linkage mounts on the forward part of the tail shaft, but to the left side. It would be pretty straightforward to fab up a spacer -- or just bend an L in the shift arm -- to move it over and out from under my leg. But I thought someone might have come up with a more interesting solution (like right hand drive). http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ok I got ya.

Well then here is my highly technical solution.

I'm not certain, but might the Jeep shifter which comes outta the top work. I think there was a post on this awhile back. Creeper
