I have a 2barrel Weber (don't they make BBQs?) carb on my 170 Slant 6... It backfired today and caught fire! the engine wouldn't start so I cranked it and cranked it... Smoke started coming out from under the hood and my primer started boiling..

I was at a cruise and a guy named Joe happened to have a beer handy to put me out. My engine smells like BBQed beer now.

So I had to find a replacement filter. I have the mesh top Weber filter with the foam filter (I remember someone telling me that they catch fire) I found the foam for an Edelbrock air cleaner... It's just foam rubber. 12 fucking dollar foam rubber. I went over to the fabric store and bought enought foam rubber to make 8 filters for $3.

The only downside is that it's green foam.

It's never boring.

So if you remember someone telling you that they catch fire, and you're replacing the foam rubber again, are you trying to prove them right?
Not bustin' your balls or anything, but if someone said they burn, and you've already torched it once, seems like running without an airfilter would be better until you can find one that won't turn your car into a charcoal briquette.

I have to drive the thing!

I'm going to modify the stockie to fit the new carb... everything takes time.

and it runs WAY too lean without the filter.

Foam disintegrates over time and gets caught in your carb. Any kind of foam is NOT a good air filter.

Glad you didn't have too much damage to your car.
