P.M. sent?

I don't understand why people post "P.M. sent". I see this a lot in the classifieds. Do I need to do this, too, to make sure my private messages are received? Whenever I log on, read a thread, or go from on thread or another, I get a pop-up box that tells me if I have a P.M. Does it not work that way for everyone? Do you have to turn on some sort of function for that?

I think it's kind of like a dog pee-ing on a tree to mark it's territory. They are claiming their spot in line. I agree it's not necessary, although I think I've done it before, too. Pretty typical message board stuff, I guess.

It is being done as a first come first serve in my opinion, Marking territory on who would be first in line for the item for sale.
