I know, dumb thing to ask, but...I just picked up this 49 chevy fastback and the dp90 is looking alittle worn out.
I have tons of striping on it so no thinner.
any other ways to make it look alittle better?
It's going for paint in Oct., so I just want to make it last til then.
My wife decided it's "her" car now. she wants it painted, interior redone ect..
then it's my turn! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
any ideas would be appreciated!
heres a refresher pic...

All the things I've done to clean up the DP60 on mine would probably hurt the stripes. All I can say is try to grin and bear it until the paint session comes around. I have used No.7 white compound with good results so maybe if you're carefull around the lines....I don't know. Good luck and looking forward to seeing it glossed!
Actually..If the stripes aren't fresh, which I doubt they are, Thinner should be fine. You'd have to rub pretty hard to make them go away completely. At least thats what I would think. If worse comes to worse I'm sure you could find someone down to touch it up where the lines got thin.

I use the extra fine white 3M pads on mine.

Depends if you want to paint it eventually or not. I have seen someone use both WD-40 and ATF on a rag to wipe down cars to bring back the look of DP. Both are bad news if you're planning to paint it any time soon. Both give the paint that sort of shiny semi-gloss look that lasts until the first rain. WD40 would probably be less greasy to the touch.

ok, I've NEVER owned anything in black primer, so..if I go the thinner route, what's the process?
Iceberg, what's the process using those white pads?
I'm really not this dumb, just never done anything like this before.

I hit areas that have scuffs and stains with the white 3m pads. I had a bunch of stains on my DP from degreaser that I was using on my fully dressed flathead motor. It was the purple Castrol spray degreaser & it etched my cast aluminum Edmunds air cleaners, my finned generator & regulator cover, and stained my DP90 on my fenders and firewall. This shit really sucks....don't ever use it on anything you like. Simple Green is much cheaper and works better.
Anyway, after rubbing the primer down with the 3M pad, I spray it w/ straight Simple Green and rub it out with a fresh terry cloth rag (Costco specials). It also works pretty good at taking out the scuffs that my five year old son puts on my running boards. Make sure you use the extra fine 3M pads, not the red fine pads. The red ones remove too much material. I use the red pads when I have to prep an area for touch up. I'll check with my buddy, who supplies me with the pads, for a P/N for you tomorrow.

I like to leave mine in the sun for a couple years to get that faded milky grey look. everyone swears that its a barn fresh old custom. I wouldn't want it any other way http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
