"centering" a Vega Strg. Box

Anyone know the correct procedure to "center " the input shaft on a Vega steering box . I'm using a rblt .box on my 26 LakesMod T(side steering) Seems like I read that 1/2 the rotation from lock is not correct. One local "guru" says at approximate center, line up 2 of the 4 index flats on the output shaft splines parallel with axis of the input shaft . When I do this the box has 2 turns CW and 2 1/2 turns CCW.. Any info,SWAG's, appreciated Thanks

I heard that too but I tend to think that would only be relavant if the box is in a Vega, where the design of the toe in on turns makes it take more distance to get the same amount of turn one direction than the other.

On the other hand, a lot of boxes are made with a "high spot" on the gears so they are tighter at the centered spot so the steering doesnt wander on straight and narrow roads. You can sometimes feel this by temporarily tightening the cross shaft adjustment a taste too tight and feel for the bind, that's the designed in "center". ( or just a bad spot on a worn gear...)
