View Full Version : Von Dutch Pinstripes and flames

Greetings,
The reason for this e-mail is to try to separate fact from fiction.
I've recently purchased a 1934 5 window Ford coupe street rod. The fellow that I bought it from said it has a long and rich history and that it originated in southern California. It has a flying eyeball on the top of the grill where the Ford logo should be, flourishes around the gas tank door , door handles, license plate and wiper arm, and an outstanding pinstripe on the trunk. The eyeball and the pinstripe are both signed Von Dutch 60'. Nice flame job too.It appears to be a well taken care of older build. How old is hard to say. It has a 1968 Mustang 302 and automatic transmission out of a Boss Mustang. The previous owner bought it from a dealer who is no longer in business so I can't back track that way.
I was wondering if you have seen this car in your travels. It has appeared in American Rodder and Street Rodder magazines and they will go back in their archives when they can. In the mean time I'm trying to find another thread that might unravel the history of this car.
I have been in touch with Bob Burns who did a web site about Von Dutch and was a colleague of his for 38 years.. I have sent him this same picture and he seems to think the pinstripe is authentic.
Any help at all would be appreciated.

Sorry, fake. 1960-NO, 1991-YES
But the '68 BOSS 302 is SUPER RARE and worth a small fortune itself http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
But let me know if you want to buy an original never before seen ROTH/BARRIS/WINFIELD Kustom. Trust me, it's REAL! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The scoops in the hood sides scream 1990. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Bob Burns would be the guy to ask.
It would be real easy for anyone to sign "Von Dutch",but to capture his style is much more difficult.

Boss 302, Boss 351 and Boss 429 Mustangs never came with automatics!
That car looks right out of the pages of STREET RODDER circa 1994, but who knows?
Maybe it was Von Dutch's winter beater? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
No offense but I always thought the grill shell on that car loks gay. It is chopped too much. Pic was featured in Street Rodders 33-34 Ford Special issue last year.

Those hood side scoops definitely look '90's. The Boss Mustangs didn't start until 1969.

33-34 Fords are the best cars Henry made. The lines are just perfect. The hood scoops are a bit suspect but the channel and chop are very tasty. I dont know about the grille becasue I cant see it but five spokes always look good to me.
unless the inside of your car smells like vomit, he probably didnt stripe it.

by the way, do you have any shots of the radius rod mounting settup? that thing is down like 8-10 inches... Fuck Von Dutch, who built that car?
I want to see more of it. If the grill is chopped to shit like a boyd car, that aint hard to fix, plus they did that in the old days.... if it's high gloss white... well you're fucked. I really like the way it sits.
The copshopcoupe grille is chopped way low and looks perfect to me.

.......would like to see shots of the pinstriping, but the flames sure don't look like VD's "style"............ http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I thought I read somewhere that Kenneth Howard stopped striping in '58. You said it was signed '60, oh well.

First post and it's a Von Dutch controversy post. No wonder you went with upinflames! Who the hell are you?

So I gotta ask... why didn't you post pics of the Dutch Artwork?
My opinion is that you got duped... that angle chop, the rake with shortened grille, the suspension, the hood sides... and, and... and those FLAMES all scream 1995.

Hhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmm?
The guy uses his first post to pose a question and get info, no intro. The pic doesn't even help anyone to be able to properly help him. He has no stats in his file.....
.......and has already talked to Bob Burns. Bob should have been able to give him the info or steer him in the right direction. If the car is a fake or not Von Dutch work, Mr. Burns is no shrinking violet and would have told him so.
Is this a fake post??? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
