View Full Version : '32 frame reveal line question?

I had some new 32 frame rails made for my 31 roadster project and was wondering what your thoughts were on the reveal line. They aren't ASC rails, they are made from 4 seperate pieces welded at the corners and the reveal is pressed in prior to welding. My question is: There seems to be a ridge line that runs horizontally on these, that other rails don't have, what are your thought on this. I want the reveal to be as close to original as possible, and was wondering if you thought these were? (for those of you who have 32 frames, snap a few pix of yours and post them so I can compare.)

Thanks for your help!

I can't get the pictures to post because they're still to big. If I shrink them any further they'll be too small to see any detail.

Crop the detail down to just what you want to show us.

I think that is a mark left by the edge of the forms used to press the reveal in the steel plate. It ain;t supposed to show.

I have the same rails on my 31 roadster http://img59.photobucket.com/albums/v181/my31and37/Dsc00527.jpg
They are also made from 4 sections, but mine do not have that line above the reveal. I wouldnt be real thrilled about that either, but a little body filler and paint should fix it up. Obviously you cant hammer them out since the rails are boxed. Wouldnt be worth the hassle of trying to return them, especially if they were shipped.

I got the car from a guy in florida about 4 months ago, who got it from a guy in georgia 15 years prior. The guy had it sitting in a climate controlled shed the whole 15 years he had it. He said it hadn't seen weather it's whole life. Basically, I just got lucky. There isn't one pit or rust spot on it! I felt bad cutting it up......for about 2 seconds! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yep! It was too nice to pass up. Anybody else have any thoughts on the rails? Concenses tells me the line shouldn't be there, correct?

If they were mine I'd think about maybe grinding the line down a bit. If the rails are boxed like you say then losing a bit of the metal wont hurt. To be on the safe side I'd get a piece of steel the same thickness as the rails and bend it in the vise to the same angle as the raised part. I'd then grind out the line very carefully until it looked ok then I'd measure the steel and calculate how much I'd taken off with the grinder. The rails are probably a gauge thicker than the originals anyway, plus they're boxed - so losing a small amount wouldn't hurt them. You can always fill grinding inperfections with filler to smooth them out.

That roadster sure looks sweet!!!!

Are those repro Deuce rails made specifically for Model A bodies to go on (flat along the top)? or are they for 32 only (more sway-backed)? I'd like to find some Deuce rails configured from the fabricator for flat-bottomed Model A bodies. From your picture, I can't see a gap between the frame and the body, so I was wondering.

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond but I've been on vacation the last week.

Nummnut, the frame is from the roadster shop in elgin, IL

Southfork.... There is a gap, I need to cut out a little more of the rear floor so it sits down on the frame better. I'm going to keep the rumble seat, so I'm being cautious. Then I'm going to shorten the firewall pads in the front where they come in contact with the frame, so it has a mini channel look. The rails are pinched so the body should slide right down over the frame about 3/4 inch in that spot. This will take care of the gap.
