Anybody here have any suggestions on a "specialty car" insurance company? I am shopping around, and I have gotten what looks to be a decent quote from American Hobbyist, but there's a dozen others out there. I'd especially like to hear from anybody who has had to make a claim. Good experiances or bad!
(I have Nationwide on my 52 right now, but they are starting to give me a hard time over custom bodywork and a "racing engine". Plus most of the "specialty quotes I have been getting are about 1/2 of what I am paying now.)

Make sure if they state "car shows, parades etc." you have proof, if you need to collect some money. My friend flipped his 32, on the way home from a parade, wouldn't pay until he proved it. Ya they checked, for 35K.......OLDBEET

there is also Grundy insurance. There has been a discussion on this issue before. Do a search on thread called " Old car Insurance, who do you use? "

Both Hagerty (http://www.hagerty.com) and Grundy (http://www.grundy.com) are top notch.

I don't recall which one I called, Hagerty or Grundy, I want to say Hagerty, but they asked how I drive the car. They then said they only insure for SHOW cars, stuff that gets driven to shows or parades only. Now, alot of people would just lie, but with MY LUCK, my brakes would give out, I'd rear end an AMG Benz, it would be a Tuesday night and no shows to even pretend I was going to.

i've had JC Taylor for years, great customer service and hagerty wouldn't insure me with an airbag suspension. do not be tempted to lie or omit certain information about your car, if you have to put in a claim and it comes up that you lied or omitted, you are screwed. give 'em a call, thay have a toll free number...

I have used Hagerty since April 1996.
Two cleims, both paid promptly.
When the 47 Coupe is going, it will be insured with Hagerty.
I have never heard of "Showcars, Only" thing.
Mine was driven to Cruisin the Coast in 1998, where the first claim happened.
No question about whether the incident was covered.
did I mention I am a happy customer?

From Hagerty's web site:
"Vehicles insured on our program must be used on a limited basis consistent with the operation of something valuable, such as club functions, exhibitions, organized meets, tours, and LIMITED PLEASURE DRIVING." (I added the caps.)
I haven't actually talked to Hagerty on the phone, but I have talked with some others. They all asked if I would EVER drive it to work, etc. I said yes, occasionally to keep the fluids flowing, and they said that was OK. I definitely need to have insurance that won't give me a hard time over driving the car for no apparent reason other than being bored with the late model!

I use Grundy International. A guy in our club had his suicide door blow open(no safety pins) last year and within a month, the guy had a check from Grundy covering all of the repair costs including pinstriping.

What do you young guys do for Ins? My son's 19 and were having a hard time Insuring his '57, we want full coverage on it. We have American now and they said he cant drive it until he's 26. We had American National until Feb and dropped them when we found out the never had him covered on his car, thank God nothing ever happened.

Grundy has seem to be the best for me so far, $80,000 in coverage, liability, theft, fire and collision about $350 a year, quick service, no hassle.

ratster- I have had Nationwide on all my cars ever since I was 16. I didn't get my 52 till I was 22, but they did insure it. Thing was, though, I had to settle for the average value of a 52 Chevy at the time. Remember they are including all the "field cars" that have trees growing thru them to get the average. (At the time it was about 3 grand, which was OK since that was about what my car was worth.)
After a couple years (of good driving, of course!), they let me go to a "pleasure driving" policy, which was more like the specialty companies, they let me have declared value. I just had to get an appraisal. In Nov 2002 I smacked a deer while I was in North Carolina...did almost 7 grand in damage...I had a check in about a week.
The reason I am switcing now is that I am driving the car less, and the quotes I have been getting would more than make up for the multi-car discount from Nationwide. Plus, as I plan to chop the top (this fall?), I want to increase my declared value since it would take more to duplicate the car, even if the real value isn't any higher. Nationwide don't get that. The specialty companies at least SEEM to get it.
BTW Nationwide was the ONLY "national" company that would even write a policy for a car that old. State Farm, Progressive, Geico, etc wouldn't touch it. They can do you well if you put all your late models on the policy, too.

<font color="green">I tried insuring both cars with Hagerty last year.
They asked sooooo many questions and wanted sooooo many pictures I finally just told them all I wanted was insurance, not trying to get them to buy it.
Gonna check on the Grundy thing.
Never heard about them before.
Nobody using Sneed Robinson and Gerber?

I am checking into both Hagerty and Grundy to insure my 57 wagon. Not many local places will even touch my car for whatever reason!!
The prices seemed reasonable, and from what I have seen they both are pretty reputable compaines.

I use Hagarty.
A suggestion.....
Contact the State insurance office in your state( the division that regulates insurance co.s) and ask about companies history for claim settlement, cancellation history, etc.etc of companies you are intrerested in.
