Cool Finned Aluminum License Frame

Hi guys,

My name is Bob. I am into 50's and 60's retro cars and rat rod type stuff. I am currently working on a 55 Bel Air with a Mooneyes flavor. Recently, I saw Bo Huff's cool Model A sedan turned topless hot rod in Ol Skool Rodz magazine (Issue 4). It has an awesome finned alum license frame you can see in the picture. Looks a lot like a big old Cal Custum valve cover with the wrap around fins and then of course cut out in the center for your plate. Anyone know where to find one of these????? Here is a link to my car if you are interested. 4.88 gears, 4 speed, white tuck and roll, Moon tach and wheel, torque thrusts and a cross ram dual 4 motor. Don't know if I have ever seen a finned license frame for sale, you could always cut up a finned valley cover though....

Don't worry, I want to build a ratty Model A Tudor next with wide whites, Radir Rims and either black primer or preferably just rust or WD-40 (HA!). A 392 Hemi, or more likely whatever I could get for free would likely power this one. I am SURE I'll have more fun with it. I am so used to just jumping on top of the 55 when I need parts off the top shelf and I have almost done it a couple times since painting. Too much stress... Thanks for the response!

I have it registered at Goodguys in Indy. Don't know if I will make it. Trying though. I'd also like to make the Indy Road Rockets Rumble, but looks like maybe next year. My wife has me painting kitchen cabinets for my son's school graduation party. Know what I mean???? Anyway, I sneak to the garage and bolt something back on at least once a day, sometimes twice...

Beautiful work but your hospital white sanitary garage is too intimidating for me. I'd be fraid to rub up against he cabinets. Very nice. I wish I could be that sanitary. It will be a super car.

By the way, don't be intimidated by the cabinets. They are just plywood doors to cover up all my hoarded crap (haha). I just reroll them with paint when they get burned from the welder or splattered with rubbing compound.

I've seen 2 like that over the years. 1 was cheap chromed plastic and the other was fairly cheap looking casting. kinda like you'll see at autozone. Both were sold at swap meets &amp; car shows. The bug-eye sprite style light and frame holder is a separate deal. Those come in a couple sizes and quality varies from not too bad to crap. For the frames, look for the guys at car shows or events that will add your name to frames. Haven't seen them for a while tho. They all seem to like the ones they can personalize now.

It's been an unusually busy day and it wasn't until now that I was able to take a look at the picture of the frame.

The Hoosier Swap Meet, one in the Spring, which is pretty good, and the one in the fall that you can't really see it all in one day. At the Marion County Fairgrounds. You've really never heard of it?

How south of Lafayette are you? Still Tippecanoe (sp?) county?

I know the Hoosier you are talking of, just didn't connect the wires upstairs. I used to go when it was held inside of the Indy 500 track. Haven't been since. THANKS for the info on the license frame. I will keep an eye open for one, or perhaps look for something cooler. This seems like an area where there should be better availability of something. Maybe I'll make something. Doesn't help that our plates are ugly green with purplish lettering!

OUCH! I started to say I am old, but not that old, but then...

actually, you are probably not that far off. I think it was around the early '80's. I was driving my high school car at the time. It was a 67 rs camaro convertible with a tunnel ram and dual fours. Pretty ratty, but went like stink. I remember buying a couple of doors there and making my girlfriend (now my wife) help me drag them to the parking lot. We had to put the top down to haul em home. I did get to drive around the track though, and back then they didn't watch your speed much. BIG FUN!
