I would like to go to Speed Week this year and would like to know if it's better to be there early in the week or toward the end, the dates for this year are Aug 14th-20th, I can only go for a couple of days and want to make the best of it, thanks.

If you want to see alot of cars run. Get there the first weekend, if the racers break something they go home about mid-week, but make sure that you are there thru at least Tuesday morning to watch the record runs. That seems to be the day that the "Faster" cars are setting the records after working out the bugs.

It's also important to be there early in the day, when the air is good and the heavy hitters are in line to run. 7:00 or 7:30 AM is a good time to arrive on the salt, buy a pancake breakfast, and then head straight for the starting line.

At Speed Week in 1999, I took these pictures shortly after 8:00 AM: http://www.roadsters.com/chauvin/

Here's the LSR schedule on my site: http://www.roadsters.com/races/

Be there for tech if you want to see the cars and bikes up close and in great detail without the crews crawling all over them in a pit thrash. Hoods and tonneus are off or open, as are body panels on the 'liners. It's a long wait for the teams, usually a rather relaxed time and a good opportunity to ask questions, take pictures, and get a feel for the entire experience. Observing tech inspection is also an interesting part of the experience -- but not a good time to ask questions of anyone involved in the process, although I'm sure most folks have that figured out already.

Most of the organized end-of-the-day hi-jinx -- Bend-of-the-road pyrotechnics, Bean Bandits' taco feed, HOP UP 100-mph Club banquet . . . all free and open to everyone -- take place early in the week.

Before long, there's bound to be a Bonneville needs list starting on the HAMB, so stay tuned . . .
