I have a pretty good leak coming from my Chevy straight six 216 rear main seal. Does anyone out there have any advise on how to change out this seal? The OEM replacement part is the two piece wick rope style, but also on the market is a rubber two piece replacement. What is best? I have been told that the engine has to be popped by some people, and that it can be replaced with the engine in by others. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Ive done this many a time without pulling the motor.
You can put either the rope or rubber seal back in.
Drop the pan, you may have to drop the tie rod first.
pull the transmission back, hopefully its a three speed.
drop the crank starting at the back without totally disconecting
the crank from the block. Push the top piece of the seal from the top and then the bottom. If you are replacing with rubber seal just slide it in the grooves. If the rope is going back in, then use a chinese finger tool, sold at auto parts store. Slide the finger in the groove at the top where the seal came out of, slide the tool out the other side, grab on the new seal with the fingers and slide back into the upper grove.
install the bottom seal and put bac together...
