If I want to know how to fix an appliance I'd E mail Jerry because thru aquaintances here on the HAMB and meeting him in person I've learned that he is a good person, to be trusted, and an appliance repairman.
If I went to another site I'd never been to I wouldn't know if I was given correct information or just fucked around with by the first asshole who answered because i was "the new guy" or something.
Same thing if I happened to have a S-10 question, I know and respect the opinions of many people here, so why would I want to go somewhere and ask an important question about something from a board of strangers?
I'm not talking about long threads about how great bla bla dishwasher or S-10 is, with a lists of 50 pictures with a description on the back but just a quickie question about a quick fix, hopefully. doesn't hurt a bit.
Besides, a question about an S-10, as was mentioned, just might help someone with the same problem on a "real hotrod" that is running an S-10 drive train... Ya never know.
And whats a good rockerbilly greaser ratrodder poser show without at least a half a dozen rockerbilly bands, each with their stand up bass player? It's definitly on topic with most people here, even with the ones who aren't rockerbilly posers http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
(Them cats were damn cute, but they're going to shread that chair just like mine did to my chair similar to it)
If ya want more on topic posts start posting more on topic posts!
And this thread is OFF TOPIC TOO http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
I'd say we're doing ok.
I have 90 posts up on one page and only 12 are off-topic.
Some of the off-topic stuff is ok, especially when some of the more interesting guys post it.
Interesting is a personal choice, but some guys are worth tuning in most times.
Don't like a post about a particular thing?
Skip it.
A particular guy uses BS titles to draw in the unsuspecting?
Skip him or put him on "the list" for a while.
Do you and your buds always talk about rods and customs?
Never about beer and women and UFO's and what ifs?
You must run a boring garage.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well when a place like this becomes a big family things tend to get that way. I don't mind it, I read what I want to and discard anything that I don't. Sometimes I come here to get a laugh and I usually find something that does. Satin http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes, your probably right. Why would we want to share other information with our HAMB friends other than car stuff? So from now on, no more great deals on cool furniture, babies being born or friends dying (unless they leave you a "hot rod" or "custom" in their will . Actually, we should probably stay away from such topics as 'cycles (that would include mini bikes), music, and perhaps tatoos (unless of course it's of a... you know). Even though they have a tie-in with "hot rods" and "customs" it seems easy to get side tracked on those subjects and get off topic.
As far as art is concerned. Let's limit it to only things that show a "hot rod" or "custom" or could be put on a "hot rod" or "custom". I'm a little unsure about pinstripping. On a deck lid would be ok but on a purse...hmmm, I think not.
Ok, let's talk pin-ups. A half naked girl posing on a car? You bet! A completly naked girl posing in a cowboy hat and boots? NO WAY!
There, that should about cover it.
Have fun posting.
Opps, I'm gonna have to change my thumbnail, there's no hot rod or custom in it! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

gee since when did you get nominated to o/t post enforcer. As the guy who runs the Rodding Roundtable I know that I would be pissed if someone with no authority started trying to police what was going on on my forum. I think that Ryan has things under control and doesn't need your help. That is what Grimlok is here for. If you don't like the content here go start your own site and moderate it the way you like but don't tell us how to act in someone elses garage.

i never said i was the HAMB police,or a moderator or any of that crap.i'm just sayin i'm a regular guy who checks out the HAMB and hates to see time and space taken up by rants about off topic stuff.ryan DOES do a good job of running the site, but if you guys forget, even he made a post about this issue several threads back, and to me it just seems that no one listened to it.personally,i love what the HAMB has given us and i'd just hate for it to be ruined by a bunch of crappy posts about stuff that doesnt matter.and as far as trying to run things in someone else's garage, this is OUR garage, not just yours and i think everyone's opinions and thoughts should be said, heard and accounted for.like i said,i'm just ranting and letting off a little steam, and just askin some of you guys to THINK before you post somethin here, cuz then we all gotta skim through the nonsense to find a few decent posts.this is supposed to be a place for like-minded people to hang out, let's just try to keep it that way.i'm just sayin how i feel,no need to get defensive over the matter.

Buddy, this is a party in a giant frickin' garage with 5000± people. We're all at this party because of a common interest, but there are a lot of different conversations going on. Why do you feel the need to grab a bullhorn and tell us what we can and can't talk about?
Now, I've been at this party for a few years now, and I know a bunch of guys here have jobs/experience in fields other than kustoms and hot rods. If I need some info, I'm going to ask them.
Now grab a beer and enjoy the party.

hotrod54chevy, I have checked all your posts since you've joined and I can say I didn't read a post you replied to that was off-topic. That's cool, that's your choice.
But I agree with the guys and DrJ about trust when it comes to information and the vast amount of experience here on the Hamb. I many times will pm a guy about off topic help I may need. But I too will put one on the board because even though I can keep track of who I trust. I can't keep track of the experience everyone has in other areas. Want on topic all the time?
Boy that would get boring.

Actually it isn't your garage its Ryan's. I don't claim it as mine. I am here because Ryan allows it. And as had been mentioned a few times you have created an off topic post to complain about off topic posts. If you look at my post history you will find that I have about 375 posts in 3 years on this version of the software. So it isn't me starting them.
I would think if Ryan has a problem with a topic then he would delete them. He can do that and has in the past.

OK Creepy, let me spell it out for you in simplistic terms that might not confuse you too much.
Let's say Ryan's invited a bunch of strangers to a cake decorating circle. Some of us arrive at the stated time, say 7.00 pm, others come in later. Anyway the conversations are going nicely in between sips of iced tea and bites of cucumber sandwiches. Occasionally someone will say they have other interests besides cake decorating, say cat grooming or feng shui arrangements of their dearly departed taxidermied pets.
Most of the time the topic stays on cake decorating because that is what got us to Princess Ryan's party in the first place.
Now Ms.Creepy comes to the party at 12.00 midnight, she enjoys the part about the correct ways to mix icing and stuff but the second someone says they enjoy making macrame pot holders she loses it.
You are Ms. Creepy.
Just go back and reread what you wrote, you contradict yourself umpteen times. You say you're not the police, yet you are the police.
I feel I have level of trust with the folks in here and I'd hope it's because time has proven what their first and foremost reason for staying here is because of cars.
We're not automatons that have singularly myopic existances that preclude other avenues of time wasting.
And I don't appreciate someone showing up at midnight telling me what to talk about.

perception is subject to many variables, whether or not the one to ten percent of non traditional conversation is acceptable can change in ones mind dependant not upon reality but more likely upon how you feel at any given moment. if you feel the ratio is unbalanced the simplest solution may be to start an on topic thread and not respond to the off topic threads. even if for instance four tech posts in one month showing the very same correct way to split a wishbone is the result, so be it. it's still on topic. and if you would like to remind people in a more positive manor of the importance of an acceptable balance it would go over a lot smoother then the form in which this thread was directed.
I have done both, complain about the seemingly overwhelming amount of off topic posts and responded to them.
at this time, at this moment, I don't think it's too bad. the off topic posts are still in the same general vein as this site..
Nads, how come no one uses the term "you can lick me from crack to sack" anymore? seems like it's all I used to hear... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I'll stick up for him a bit. Today's pretty good. Friday I logged on and none of the top 25 posts had anything to do with hotrods. Just drama shit. I was looking for the Friday art show and didn't find it. I look foreward to the art even when it's a bit off topic because I respect the artists and where they're coming from. I also dig the progress pics, the tech, and the how the hell do I do this stuff questions. And because we all are kinda like a family, there's a place for people to let loose a little or some friendly chat too. Friday was truly depressing tho. I felt like I'd come back to the neighborhood and everyone had moved away. I didn't recognize the place. Nothing here at all but bitchy drama crap. I hope that's not the direction we're heading.

I know I still am new, but I think of the HAMB just like a real garage. Mostly talk about cars, but people still think about other things, and when they need help they ask friends.
If some one just bull shits about everything but cars, just ignore it if you don't like it, there is no law saying you don't have to answer people.
I will admit I enjoy half of the OT posts and think the other half are a waste of time, but oh well such is life.
I think this is what makes the HAMB, the HAMB. People helping people with questions and problems of the car kind, with the occasional info of the non vehicular kind.
And I really enjoy it, Thanks Ryan!! Keep up the good work.
