ok i did the 235 thing allready that motor didnt like the car so it decided to go away like the 216. thanks to some super cooler hambers i got my self a 261. now i was looking at this thing for a few min tonight. now where i need to mount the motor (timing cover backing plate) its complety diff from the 235 set up. can i just pull the cam and stuff and swap the 216 backing plate onto the 261? (thats what i did for the 235 swap) thats my onley problem im seeing right now didnt really get to look it all over yet. any pointers any one can throw out let me know. from what i have read on this, its preety much same as the 235 swap. o yea one more question.. will a 235 water pump fit a 261? since i allready have a modified water pump that brand new i would like to use that if at all possible. thanks in advance. by the way the motor is a 60 or 61 pontiac 261 if that matters.

Patrick's Antique Car parts, www.patricksantiquecars.com (http://www.patricksantiquecars.com), used to have a great article on doing exactly that. Memory serves me in that you have to use some 235 stuff in doing the swap, but check out that website. So where in Canada are you from??

He's from Metro Detroit.
Bryan, I think it should be absolutely Identical to bolting in your 235... but I don't know if you'll have waterpump issues.
I used to have that Patricks thing, but it's packed away with all the stuff for the move. If ya wanna see it, please email me and I'll dig it out for ya.

235s and 261 are practically identical EXCEPT that the head on the 261 is slightly different and the 261 has more CI. All the rest of the parts are interchangeable, including the water pump. You will need a short shaft water pump to fit it in the 50. As for the mounts, you can drill the holes into the timing cover plate and use the one that's on the car instead of swapping them. It's the same as the 235... later ones were side mounted, earlier ones were front mounted. Same engine though.
