SPUN (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/spun)
Spun is a fledgling company offering parts for hot rodders who prefer
clean, classically designed accessories to ever-changing fads. We've
known all along that you can't improve a Deuce grille shell, that bones
were meant to be split, and that rubber only comes one way - bias. Call
it having an eye for detail or just knowing what's cool...
It's in these design foundations of hot rodding that we found
inspiration for our new wheel cover. We spent hours staring blankly into
freshly Spun aluminum, months designing and refining, and nights
dreaming up design details and tooling parameters. We see and value the
art of hot rodding and the like the generations of speed equipment
designers before us, we strive to ensure that form follows function. If
that sounds remotely like something you relate to, we think you'll get
what we are doing here.
Simply put, we're an outfit that appreciates something that's right.

Thanks for the compliments. Mine? Yes. Secret? No way. Spread the word.
No, I meant while you were in developement? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Looks geat, no wonder your car is not running yet, you have been busy!
BTW, did you trademark and copyright it? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I've had them in my hands. They are simply amazing...
Trademark? Yes.
Copyright? Yes.
Patent? Not yet. That said, if someone pulls a fancy one I will pull the HAMB card faster than you can say, "I just fucked myself in the most royal way imaginable..."
Give Kevin props for his first web design... Looks great.

Who made the accessory wheel covers like that back in the day? I've heard they are very desirable. This solves my quest. I've wanted to have a set for a while. I will be a customer. Looks too bitchin'! I would be interested in seeing a few photos on how they secure. Is there more than just the hubcap holding them on? Do you use screws like a regular moon disc? Thanks, These are the kinda products we need.
Rocky
05-16-2004, 11:13 AM
.......Fascinating! Are you gonna make them for any other wheels? I have a set of 16" [and a set of 15"] early GM wheels with the clip-held center caps that would certainly benefit from a set of those babys.

Pretty cool. I guess the price on the heavily pitted 35 wires just went up. Are you working on a set for the inside? Real hot rods don't have fenders ya know.

I'll repeat Rocky's inquiry. Are there plans for any that would fit any different diameter wheels. I have a set of 16" wires that have been professionally changed to 15" and a set of those would be a most welcome addition. Please, Please!!! I'm thinking some that fit 15" would sell like hotcakes.
This kind of an announcement is most welcome on the HAMB,IMO.

Don't make me drive down there! I'll bring my pontiac wheels and I won't leave 'till you make me a set-o-them for it!!!! I'm not bluffing!.....................hullo?
I'll leave the questions for Kevin to answer... He doesn't have a machine at home, so he'll be back on tomorrow...
Very nice!! They are like what was on the Hilborn car. Allways loved them. May have to get a set in the future

Kevin Lee

Allright. Sorry. Like Ryan said I don't have a machine at home so here goes.
The disks are Spun from an 1000 series aluminum blank that is .060 thick. You lose a bit of thickness in the spinning process...I don't have one right here but that ends up somewhere between a penny and a nickel if you need a layman's measure. (I do)
Yes the disks are screw on like the old moon disks. This is a roll your own type of deal. Hot rodding being what it is I don't really think I'm qualified to tell you what pattern you HAVE to run as far a mounting screws go. I recomend at least three screws but I personally prefer four for asthetics. You might want six? I supply a paper pattern and the hardware though. You CAN snap them on with just the center cap BUT...there are variances since I didn't manufacture the center caps so I can't guarantee them to stay put without screws. My personal set will be screwed on. (four screws)
The good thing about screwing them on is that you don't HAVE to have 16" Ford wires to run them...you can screw them to any 16" wheel and have the look since the center cap pops right into the disc itself.
Fifteen inch discs? That could definitely happen. I concentrated on sixteens because it seemed like the obvious choice. I wasn't going to sink time and money into something so cool if it didn't fit my own car, right? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I am most likely going to do eighteens of the Aero Disc next but customer and potential customer feedback will be the ultimate deciding factor.
I've got some other things coming down the pike but I need to get this established first. You won't be disappointed. No dodads - just hot rod parts.
Hope I didn't miss any questions. I'll read back through to make sure. And thanks for the support.

Actually they are numbered 01 - ?? so if you really do want a low numbered set you should get in early...I assume you were half joking.
choprods - They screw to the outside of the rim...just like an old Moon disk.
Kevin -- Did you provide the covers for Jim Lattin's vintage lakester or is he running an old set?

AV8, ditto on the above comment,
That car would have to be in my top 3 favourite cars of ALL TIME.
If ever there was an example of a pioneering hot rod, that for me, is it.
Would love to see/hear more......Grim, love the discs as well.

Wish I had more pics. I pinched this one from SCTA's site and Sunday's El Mirage coverage.

Those are bitchin. I'd be interested in some 15" myself. Would they be the same price prepped for paint?
Can I ask a potentially dumb question? I've never had moon disks either, so when you screw into the wheel do you run the risk of loosing air? How does that work?
SamIyam
05-20-2004, 12:59 PM
Nice, very nice.
Do you have any plans to pop the "laquers" off?
Like the ones seen on Tony Nancy's 22Jr. car? (the flathead powered one), the early Glass Slipper and the early 334 Coupe??
They would be most easily made... and most bitchen to have... polished... mmmmmmmmmm!!
Sam.

Grim replies to all of my posts crying about me bashing repop bomber seats. Honestly, I like the bomber seats and pulled out my wallet to buy them for my 3 window. Untill a close friend asked me how many store-bought parts are going on a real Bonneville race car. The question hurt because he was right and the seats are bad ass. The guy building those bomber seats is doing a great job... so good in fact that they will be in every junk car this time next year.
These disks dont speak to junk-rodders, they are old timey and apeal to the four-banger Riley crowd. Different altogether.
I guess I am more upset about how many people are building these cars now then what is being reproduced. I dont like crowds, I dont like intros without hotrods (most are these days), I dont like shit cars, and I dont like the fact that anything can be bought with a Visa card. I dont go to car shows because I am embarrassed by who likes my cars. I am angry about being part of the "in" crowd.
It has nothing to do with you Grim so pull your dick out of my ass. I had store-bought stuff on my last 34 and my freinds gave me grief for it, if you dont have friends like that, good for you. I'm glad they gave me shit, the higher standard is what I enjoy about what we do.
I do like those disks. Total museum quality. They will never be popular so they will always be cool.

av8 - Thanks for posting those pictures. I had heard someone was cloning that car but had never seen photos. Of course a person would have to be blind not to realize that Hilborn's car was a huge inspiration. To answer your question - I did not supply those discs - but I wish I had gotten the chance. (And check your last post about the flathead block if you would.)
Django - I'll see how things pan out with the fifteens. Supply and demand you know. But sorry, I'm not set up to prep for paint.
Gooch - Glad you like them. The rest of that post kind of blind sided me so just let it be known that I am pulling out and won't be joking anymore. Done.
TV - Just in case anyone isn't clear on this, they are in stock right now. I need to send you some photos of recent progress on my car.
Almost forgot. Sam - No real plans for those covers but I will take your input into consideration. I do have some other things in the works, but there will be no promises until product is ready to go out the door - I think that's how this type of business should work.
Thanks again,

I like the way you work, kevin.
It makes me forget about the squabble we had a while back.
Forgot what it was already... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Anyway, doing business like you're doing is awesome... not that you have to be all secretive and shit... but damn, people starting hype to get something off the ground is just that... hype.
You got your shit together... have a solid product for a niche market... and have them ready to ship when the web-site hits the net... done deal.
Sam.
