MAY 15, 2009 -- I'm planning on doing a little Photobucket spring cleaning this weekend. I took a look at pages 82-152 of this thread and some of the same pics are showing up as many as three times! This is mostly my fault, because sometimes I post pics without realizing that I've posted them already (long ago) -- not to mention those who pulled Gordie's pics from VintageModifieds.com and posted them here too. No, I am not complaining or pointing fingers! But I think I should pull the multiples of my pics that appear here more than once. If you see a pic has been deleted, don't panic -- it simply appears elsewhere on this thread...

Anybody have any color photos of Ronnie Martin's yellow No. 4 coach that he raced at Lancaster (NY) Speedway, Spencer Speedway (Rochester) or Oswego (NY) Speedway in '72? The car was purchased from the Snyder Bros. (it was Bobby Hudson's No. 10 coach/sedan in '71). The next year ('73) it became a Pinto...

Is anyone going to the DAARA races in Zephyrhills Florida on February 19-22? I am flying in from TX and the owner of my father's old car is going to let me take it out for a few laps. The races are going to have vintage modifieds, sprints and Model A's.

In Australia these were called sedans but from the looks of the pictures I've seen through this awesome thread you guys call them modifieds, this was part of the hugely popular USA 4 car team that toured every summer from 1974 to the mid eighties (different cars every year of course!) with different drivers including Jack Hewitt and Charlie Swartz and Rodney Combes.

This Monza was a stock car products chassis with an injected big block.

The 112 BATMOBILE was designed and built by Kenny Weld. It's one and only race, which it won, was at the Syracuse N.Y. mile. Very questionable if it was "legal" . Many gray areas. This car started a whole new MODIFIED evolution. There was always a minimun body width, nothing was ever said about how wide a body could be.

I can remember reading the articles about it and Syracuse at the time in Stock Car Racing magazine (I still have the issue), it changed modifieds forever.

The modifieds of that era were supposed to resemble some kind of production car, e.g., Thunderbird, Gremlin, etc., the Batmobile was supposed to be a Lincoln. The only piece that resembled a Lincoln was the trunk lid. The trunk was the only piece that was Lincon, it even had the factory letters on it that spelled "Lincoln".

In response to the question about which direction speedways run in Australia. The answer basically anticlockwise or keep turning left as illustrated by the pics below.

There are some classes that do run clockwise which are the "Street Stocks" and the motorbike sidecars.

Hi folks attached below are some pics of a famous Aussie Super Modified. This was driven to great effect by local legend Billy Wigzell. Whilst in Bills hands it was powered by a 383 Dodge and then lastly a fuel injected L88 427 Chev.

Pics show Bill in typical style at local track Rowley Park Adelaide.

I Think the car looks more like a Lincoln then some of those other cars that were in the race. The grill was a Lincoln wasnt it?

Phil Edwards at Lancaster (NY) Speedway, 1972. This was the old Gordy Treichler coach, a twin to his brother's (Roger's) No. 74 coach. It was sold to Edwards in late '71, who then sold it to Bill Bitterman, who then sold it back to Edwards. After Edwards raced it in '72, it was sold to Jerry Ciancio (No. 00) for the '73 season. It was reskinned with Gremlin tin, then dispappeared...

I was there for that race.

The show of the day was Geoff Bodine. He got a flat tire early in the race and had to pit under green. He lost a lap in the process.

WITHOUT the aid of a caution, he unlapped himself and proceeded to repass everyone again under the same green flag stretch to retake the lead.

His day ended when his open tube rear end axle broke and put him in the fence near the flagstand. Until then, he had'em ALL covered!!!!!!

Just saw the pics of your 37 Ford and it looks great. I have a 91 Troyer that ran the asphalt tracks of New England and I am fitting a 37 Chevy cut down body off a old racer that had a bad frame to it. Not as easy as it looks but when its done I think you are going to have a sharp looking piece. Good Luck!

I love seventies modifieds, they were called hot rods here in Australia and in the Newcastle area where I grew up we had a bunch of 'em. I can't find one decent picture of them on the internet though, we don't have too many history pages of Australian speedway (except this one http://picasaweb.google.com/dgnb69), there's one but it barely touches on my areas great cars from that era.

Bob Park, father of Steve Park. has multiple photos on this thread, had some sharp looking cars in the late 70's.

This car was owned by Lee and Candy Dolin, aka Shoestring Racing, and ran a Buick V6 engine with a lot of input from the Buick Special Products division. Numerous drivers, including Rod Spaulding, Eddie Bellinger, and even Jimmy Spencer (who finished 2nd in a feature at either Wall or New Egypt, forget which, in this car - WITH A V-6!!!) drove it in addition to Bob. Last I knew it was sold to someone in the Syracuse NY area who has since moved out of the area, so who knows what state it may be in.

Al was known as "Suicide" Sanders for good reason - his cars were a little less than, umm, robust in construction. Otto Graham's website used to have a great page on Al's career before the site went down. Apparently not only is Al still around, but so are several of his cars... including this one. And it sounded like nothing else with that big honkin' blower on it! :D This car was built by the Turner Bros (who owned Dutch Hoag's legendary #18 Modifieds seen elsewhere in this thread) and was campaigned at Oswego Speedway in the mid 1970s, primarily driven by Gary Reichert.

Now, you want to see a REALLY badass supermodified? Check out the Hemi-Cuda car that Jean-Guy Chartrand drove at Oswego for Ed Cloce:

Western N.Y. Race Fans: Got some sad news today. Gordie Reinig -- Lancaster Speedway's photographer from '67-'74 -- is in Roswell (cancer hospital in Buffalo), undergoing chemo. Before I found out, I sent him a copy of the 61st annual Foar Score Fan Club program with his picture in it (with Jack Veach -- see below) and the latest copy of Gater Racing News. His wife brought it to him in the hospital and it made his day, she says. I guess Gordie thinks most of the old-time racers have forgotten about him, so I am trying to get as many of the '60s-'70s Lancaster drivers and employees to send him a Get Well card.

Please send your get-well wishes to:
Gordon Reinig
c/o Elizabeth Reinig Federice
244 Shepard Ave.
Buffalo, NY 14217

Thanks -- and please keep him in your prayers. If it wasn't for him, there would be no "Lancaster Heroes."

Gordie is seated in the car, after winning an officials' race at Lancaster in 1973.

Looks like a 1966 or 67 Oldsmobile....not too common on the oval tracks.

Is it just me?...but when I see a yellow #5 coach, I instantly think Ray Tilley!

AH-HAH! The answer to my question...the 13th picture down! I remember Tilley in that ride at Langhorne in 1969! http://midstateantiquestockcarclub.com/langhorne_speedway_ogden_photos.html

Dr. John

John56h: That car was John Hoffman's '66 Cutlass Street Stock. If you ran a bigger, heavier car like that, you could use a 400 c.i. engine.

George M.: Tilley did drive that car, and so did Bill Rafter (in '69), before Ted got the ride.

http://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu35/johnbisci/zedd-14.jpg

Here's what Bill Rafter did with the car, April 1970, at Lancaster. Guess you could say he was really flying that day! According to the story inside Gater News, Leo Lewandowski spun in Turn 2 and Rafter caught his wheel, sending him over the guardrail. He landed in the staging lanes of the drag strip.

In 1967, promoter Ed Serwacki paid a bonus to Modifieds that did not use "jalopy" (coupe, coach) bodies -- he wanted to upgrade the class so that people would not refer to the Modifieds as "jalopies" anymore. Serwacki owned a collision business and convinced Cam Gagliardi to shed his coupe body by offering a free Mustang shell and a free paint job!

Maybe a dumb question to a lot of you guys, but 'splain to an 'ole Texas boy why so many of the tracks in the north are pavement? Does it have something to do with the weather, or just preference? Thanks, Mike

Just my theory and I'm not sure if it holds much water or not but many of the smaller Northeast paved tracks pictured in this thread were originally built for midget car racing and were located near densley populated, major metropolitan areas. (Islip, Freeport, Seekonk, Danbury and Norwood come to mind). “City folk", whether they are a paying spectator or a neighbor living near a speedway are not as tolerating of the dust associated with dirt tracks so these race tracks, either started out or later became…blacktop.

<O:p</O:pAnother reason: Auto racing in the 1960’s was all about “speed” and making stock car racing more “professional” in appearance. Nothing exemplified “speed” and “professionalism” more than racing on asphalt. There was a huge trend in the Northeast toward pavement during this era. Many dirt tracks were paved over such as Langhorne PA and <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comhttp://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/ /><st1:Street w:st=</st1:Street><st1:address w:st="on">Stafford CT </st1:address>and brand new paved tracks purposefully-built for racing started popping up like <st1:City w:st="on"><ST1:pFulton, </ST1:p</st1:City>Utica-Rome, and Albany-Saratoga in NY.

<O:p</O:pThere were still a large number of successful dirt tracks the Northeast back then too. But in the 60’s into the early 70’s, especially within the pockets of New England, Long Island and upstate NY,<ST1:p</ST1:p pavement was king.

Also...I think the types of native soils were a factor too. New England has an awful lot of sandy soil conditions and not much natural clay deposits. That made it difficult to get a good dirt/clay surface, so sometimes pavement was the best alternative. Less dust, less track prep and no more expensive than trucking in clay from 100's of miles away.

Yeah, us dirt track guys out here in the mid-west kind of forget how lucky we are sometimes.

You don't find much better dirt for racing than what we've got on the ground around here.

I don't have much personal experience with dirt tracks but I think you are right about the soil here there are several dirt tracks father north in New Hampshire,Maine and Vermont. We had a couple N.T.P.A tractor pulls here and all the drivers I got to talk to complained about the clay of the track being "beach sand" etc.I remember when the local racers used to say they needed a car for Stafford (dirt) and then another for the paved tracks so even if you had a real good surfaced dirt track in lower New England you were competing with several paved tracks for drivers/cars.As far as I know Thompson was paved way back in the early 40s.I think the paving was a cost factor all around for lower New England tracks pave it once or keep having to haul in good clay to maintain a dirt surface.Something for all you guys lucky enough to have good dirt tracks around you I'll never forget the first time I heard tires squeal on a dirt track and leave rubber on the turns enough to leave black marks on the track !!

That makes a lot of sense to me.
Here, about 20 miles north of Dallas, I have so much clay IN MY YARD that I can dig a hole with a post hole digger and fill it with water, and come back the next day and most of the water will still be there!
Most of the dirt tracks around here get the minimum of prep during a night's racing, the prep before the race being good enough.
We don't have a lot of paved tracks in Texas. I guess it's too easy to get the dirt to work here. Thanks, Mike

I don't mind dirt track racing, but for me pavement is where it's at! Dirt tracks seem to change too much with weather and duration of the day, such as grooves. Pavement grooves get settled in more easy, but wash away with rain. But can be built back up with more rubber. I also notice sometimes the track changes with heat too with pavement!

Originally built for Pete Cordez. Raced in the southern tier of NYS in the late 60's and early 70's. Found in a barnyard near Fonda NY, owned by Steve Brown, and raced in the Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club in previous years. At the time it was blue in color and numbered 68. It was completely restored by Frank Blanchard and is back racing with the Midstate club since about 2003. Obviously, the color and the number has been changed. Most recently it was raced at Zephyrhills, Florida with with the Daytona Antique club in February of 2009.

Irene responded to you, Oh, that's Emil's way, If he's busting your chops, he likes you, if he's not, that's when you have to watch out. LOL You gave a low, Oooooooooohhhh.

Pete's mom and i started taking Pete to the track before he could even walk. He was in a stroller in the Pits with the likes of Freddie Harbach, Charlie J. Wayne Anderson, Jerry Cook and many more. Though we took time from the roundy rounds for a number of years while I published Golden Chariots Magazine and The East Coast Cruise News and we went to Rod Runs every weekend. Stock car racing from the sound to the smell of burning rubber was instilled in him from his early days at both Islip and Riverhead and a few trips out to Freeport for special events.

Yes Racemad... I believe Drellos bought at least one of the Caputo cars and went racing. I will have to do my homework tomorrow and find out for sure. Where in NY are you located?
Henry Caputo owned the 11 and 111 before Chris Drellos bought both of them on the recommendation of Shoemaker. They had many different drivers in the 11 but the most effective was Pete Corey in 1963. The cars were sold after 1963 season, one going to Frank Trinkhaus which was the car that Lou Smith was killed in at Fonda and another to Ernie Gahan which he used to win the 1966 Modified NASCAR National Modified Championship.

The no. 1 offset coupe is in racing condition . Jimmy Blewitt ran 5 laps at Riverhead Raceway August of 2008 and was fast enough to make the Modified Tour show in the middle of the pack with only 5 laps in the car. Teddy Christopher may be the guy in 2009. I own the car and like to see only fast guys run it. Its parked at the Jarzombek race shop and can be seen there.

We think this thing ran on dirt up in Pennsylvania, but I have no clue as to whom it was. Seems like it was in the '50s.

How was the turning ratio on the dirt!! The front wheels don't look like they give you much to work with sliding in and out of the turns.

Modifieds and Martinsville go hand and hand
from Jayski:
Sad News - H. Lewis Compton: H. Lewis Compton, 80, who was known as the “Mouth of the South” for announcing every race at Martinsville Speedway for 44 years, died Friday at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. Since 1962 he had been known as “The Mouth of the South,” a moniker bestowed upon him by Elmo Langley, one of NASCAR’s early drivers, car owner and longtime pace car driver. Compton announced every race at Martinsville Speedway from 1955 until 1999, worked in radio for 52 years until he retired from WHEE Radio and was a licensed auctioneer for 36 years. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Lois Newman Compton of the home; two sons, John David Compton and Richard Dean Compton, both of Martinsville; five sisters, Doris Faye Clifton of Ridgeway, Carol Martin of Collinsville, Marie Hatchett of Penhook, Linda Hodges of Arkansas and Sheryl Epperly of Mechanicsville; one brother, Larry W. Compton of Smith Mountain Lake; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Collins-McKee-Stone, Martinsville Chapel, with the Rev. David Adkins officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Starling Avenue Baptist Church, 932 Starling Ave., Martinsville, Va. 24112.(see story at the Martinsville Bulletin (http://www.martinsvillebulletin.com/article.cfm?ID=17921))(3-1-2009)

SAD NEWS: This is "old news," but I just learned that Western N.Y. car owner Mel Aube died back in November, 2008 (cancer). He owned the orange No. 3 coupe driven by Darrel Claus at Lancaster in '72; the orange No. 3 Gremlin (pictured here) driven by Thort Haag in '73; and the white No. 3 Gremlin at Spencer and Lancaster Speedways in 1974. May he rest in peace.
