i am attempting to overcome the INFLUENCES of my lame-assed exhusband's MUSICAL tastes on my kids,,,,

i believe my kids should have their OWN experiences in music,,,
but i also want them to EXPERIENCE or TASTE a little bit of all the music that helped shape my mind,,,

but,,,i have thousands of bands i want to share with them,,,and aside from leaving itunes on for a month straight to play thru all the shit i've loaded,,,,,
and the fact that i don't have alot of the music i want to share,,,,

i need to come up with a shorter list of must listen to's in order to further their music EDUCATION,,,,

i think if they understand a little of the music behind my passions,,,they might be able to better understand me,,,,

of course they KNOW that i'm a freak,,,so there's no question there,,,,but i think they'll understand alot more of my HISTORY thru the music i listened/listen to,,,,

anyhow,,,its an exhausting task,,,,some songs bring back great memeories,,,others are exceptionally painful,,,
its all LIFE,,,my kids will know ME better thru it,,,
music brings open discussions,,,

i love my kids,,,,

I just tied mine up
(zip ties are gods gift to parents) and put the head phones on um, stuck some Warren Zevon in the CD player, cranked it up and made them read your web page over and over. A few days of that and they started to like anything I told them to like.
...but seriously, just play the music your into, talk to them about it (if their interested). You can't force appreciation of the arts, just expose them to it.

There are a few albums that I belive are essential for all people to have/listen to ........

Songs in the Key of Life ......Stevie Wonder
Whats Goin' On .....Marvin Gaye
Live At Folsum Prison.....Johnny Cash
Moondance....Van Morrison

I have many others but those give one a sense of how powerful music can be......

Music is HUGE to me...I have close to 1000 cd's.....some folks say it is too many and I can't listen to that many.. . .but I can always find a cd that fits my mood or situation.

Just my 2 cents worth

Well, what is the LAME stuff your Ex has them listening to and what is the GOOD stuff you want them to hear? Let's hear some stuff you are talking about.
Everyone has a different idea of what sucks, only about half of us KNOW what sucks.

Is your husband playing them Hank Williams, and you don't like it? Is he playing them Billy Ray Cyrus and you'd prefer the Hank Williams?

Do you want groundbreaking historical music, or do you want radio friendly popular PRODUCT music made for no other reason than to sell records?
Some of the timeless stuff that will be influencing musicians for years....
Hank Williams
Johnny Cash
Dylan
Zappa
Flatt and Scruggs
David Bowie
Velvet Underground
Beethoven
Strauss
Public Enemy
The Boss, early stuff mainly

If they're old enough to sit still, take them to live music. A bluegrass festival is best. That is, if they aren't already teenagers and therefore hipper to everything than you or I. Take them to a full orchestra performance, get there early and let them hear them tune up. Let them see how music is made, they might have talent. Just don't let them believe that food comes from the store instead of the farm, or that music comes from a TV, or that the guy who fixes the car practices some arcane art not for mere mortals comprehension. If you play music loud, don't. Kids and dogs have sensitive ears. My kids and my grandkids have walked around on the bandstand and even sat on the stage monitors, but they were wearing Hearos (good ear protection).

As far as shaping minds goes…that's what they'll do to you.

Do you take the kids in the car? That gives you a captive audience for your musical tastes! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I use a buddy's rig to download and compile assorted mixed CDs filled with my obscure faves to play in the car. (No CD player at home!). Whenever I take my niece and nephew anywhere, they get a dose of Hack Tunes...got my niece into songs like the obscure rap comic "B-Girls", and they dig my goofy 70s disco and 80s retro pop stuf, too!

Funny to hear my little nine year old niece singing "Riding on the Metro" or "Disco Duck" now!

Anyhow...play your tunes in the car...it'll be hard for them to escape then! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Musical taste are a very Primal instinct. All you can really do is expose them to several types of music, and there friends will as well.

They will eventually choose what they like. And be prepared to possibily not like some of it.

I like the Blues. I'm sad alot.

Check out sound tracks from movies and television. Kids and adults tend to associate images with the sounds going on in the back ground. I like to think I am open to atleast listen once to any music but I have my favorites just like anyone else. My mom put me onto Patsy Cline and Marty Robbins and my dad put me onto Led Zepplin and the Doors. My brother got me listening to Alice in Chains and my Grandmother got me started on Elvis and Johnny Cash. My cousin started me on the Reverend Horten Heat. The biggest influence for me though has always been movies. The music in Good Morning Vietnom, Hollywood Nights, American Graffiti, and (I know how gay this sounds)Cry Baby are some of my favorites. Right now as I write this I'm listen to the sound track to O'Brother where art thou. I'm not much of a blue grass fan but when I listen to it I relive the movie in my mind and it make me smile. Keep in mind that sound tracks often have a cross section of musical genra and even though your children think they don't like a certain kindof music you'll find that they are more open to it when there is another association involved.......way to serious a subject for me I gotta go set something on fire. Later. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

if you have internet access, there's 2 stations I can recommend, both out of Ypsilanti, Michigan

www.wemu.org (http://www.wemu.org) - it's an NPR station, sorry, but the only good source of jazz and blues in Michigan

and

www.wsds1480.com (http://www.wsds1480.com) - a classical country station. No, not Billy Ray Cyrus or Garth Brooks, the old shit, Sons of the Pioneers, Hank Thompson, et al.

Or, the Blues Brothers albums, anything by BB King, Dean Martin, Suicidal Tendencies, early Metallica, or the cheap compilation albums at Target or (gasp) Wal Mart that have 3 cds in them, like the blues, delta blues, jazz, swing and jive, etc.

But only listen to it when you think they aren't listening, but all us parents know they really are. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

My parents raised me on 70's rock/pop... I guess all the car rides I took with my grandfather and the big band station rubbed off more...

How can you set an EXAMPLE,,, when you are a BAD CLONE,,,,,, Start your kids on classic rock/reggae/blues/jazz and let them move on from there. They'll each find their own path that way instead of being BRAINWASHED,,, by someone they look up to.

A solid musical foundation of the past allows a smooth progression into unique musical tastes.

If I had listened to my role model's musical tastes, I'd still be smoking shitty weed and listening to Men at work.

No, I don't drink so that doesn't interest me, and I can't take the same three, (with an added 7th) chords non-stop for two straight days.
I have gone a few times when I knew some one working at the station and got passes.
(I'm within walking distance of the station.)

Do You? you going to the blues festival?

Since this post won't die I'll have to add in my obscure music tastes so I can be half as cool as everyone else.

I agree with Draglinks with the Poison, but one needs to be fully rounded out with some Alleycat Scratch, Roxx Gang, Sweet FA, Rock City Angels, and let us not forget Warrior Soul, and Circus of Power.

I had a lap dance that was so bad once that I got up in the middle of it and walked off. The bitch kept talking to her friend about a boil she needed lanced. It seems I can't even pay chicks to like me. Hell, I'll be anyones friend for 3.5 minutes for 10 bucks. Perhaps I'm just an asshole.

And to get things back on topic, I have some big plans in my head for a new top secret project.

hang me, hang em all from the gallows pole

better start winning hearts and minds, because , a flattering tongue will not lead you to gain favor. i'm sure you all have a bible, pick it up, it's good reading. i recomend proverbs 26, the whole chapter. i'll make it easy for you. proverbs (http://bible.gospelcom.net/cgi-bin/bible?passage=PROV%2B26&showfn=on&showxref=on&lang uage=english&version=NIV&x=18&y=8)

get over yourselves. there are better things to rag on. real passion is hard to come by, try thinking deep and hard about something, maybe you'll reach enlightenment.

like most things, the surface is on display. Bondo and chickenwire can make a decent looking car out of a pile of shit, and to most people, it looks good. it always takes some bondo to make a car look good, how much is your car? try some understanding, it's cheaper than a cup of coffee at the 7-11, and will make you feel a whole lot better when you are done. Here's my "mind shaping" list...

Tanya Tucker... "Delta Dawn"

Kenny Rogers... "Just dropped in {to see what condition my contition was in}"

Frank Zappa... "Joe's Garage"

David Bromberg... "Never hit seventeen {when you play against the dealer}"

Dr Hook... "Cover of the Rollin' Stone"

Neil Young... "Hey Hey, My My {into the black}"

Clint Black... "Live and Learn"

BLEED... "The last goodbye"

Tom Waits... [ALL]

Chris Isaak... [ALL]

Webb Wilder... [ALL]

and ANYTHING Doo-Wop... I love the "street corner" sound.

I have a ton more, but I need coffee......

her "homepage" is not something she wrote, (though I admit associating herself with it can be held against her too), the "sex and the city - we can talk dirty too" influence, how fast did that get old...

either way, shaping minds, how pretentious, who's to decide who should shape who's mind, I let my kids shape mine, they're a lot smarter then me.

Junkyard Dog 32

What action as this girl taken that allows anyone to judge her?

You're ALL squeaky clean, huh?

She wants to turn her kids on to some good music and simply asked for some suggestions. She didn't ask what CULT to enroll them in. The title of this post has nothing to do with the intention behind it...

I have no children, but if I did, I would be trying to share some "alternate culture" with them, too. "Poison", "Gun 'N' Roses" and anything that even sounds like RAP, blow shit. I wouldn't ban anyone from listening to them, but I WOULD try to offer some fresh alternatives, that they might miss out on, otherwise.
I think that's the point, here.

If my mom made me a CD, I'd listen to it, just because SHE likes it.

She said she loves her kids, what more do you people want?

My kid, the three year old monster that wakes up in the morning and says, "hot rod, Cadillac, hot rod," tried to shape his sister's mind by bashing her in the head with a Hot Wheels car. The little shit drew blood.
Yesterday he was so upset that I put raisins in his cereal that he dumped a cooler full of water on the living room floor. It was heavy but in his Hulk like anger he somehow found the strength to lift it up.
I have a feeling he's gonna be listening to Body Count and Public Enemy by the age of 6 without any prompting from me.

Listen I ain't judging the mystery girl, I don't know her, all I can say is that when I read her webpage I had a severe boner that kept me immobile behind my desk for 30 minutes.
It's good to see a chick with the same kind of supersonic sex drive as me.

However she does strike me as being a little desperate.
I think aloofness can be attractive too.

I apologise to Hothellrodboundbillyhoochgirl for starting this crap. I apologise in the same way that a politician apologises... only as a result of popular polling.
