View Full Version : Beehive Oil Filter Question

I have a original beehive oil filter in my roadster and need to find a new filter for it.
The filter inside has a P4 marking on it, but the Fram and Napa filters that cross reference to
that number are to wide. The Fram book shows that the P4 number belongs to the Champ
oil filter. If anyone has any information on what filter fits and where to get one please let me know.
Thank you

Jeff

According to the WIX filter cross reference, that could be an Apollo, Atlas, CAM2, Champ, Luber-Finer, or a Warner.

They all come up with the same WIX number - 51006, though. The WIX numbers are the same as Napa's.

The WIX filter measures 5.007 inches high, 4.094 Outer Diameter, and 0.553 Inner Diameter. Gasket dimensions: 4.736 O.D., 4.300 I.D., 0.072 thickness.

This probably doesn't help at all, but you might want to try a WIX...

good luck,
Jay

If you take it over to the NAPA on Elliot just west of Kyrene, someone in there ought to be able to find something that will work. Those guys are pretty good, there is an older guy named Jerry that has taken alot of time to help me with special parts and foolish schemes before.
Where in Tempe are you?

An old guy once told me that they would use a roll of toilet paper for a filter. Can't see that working too well though.

Chris, are you sure he didn't say that it LOOKED like a roll of toilet paper? I have heard that these filters look like toilet paper. You would have to be pretty careful, would Quilted Northern be a better filter than Scott 1000 sheets per roll? What about Charmin? I think a roll of TP would be too tight and I don't see anything flowing through it. I may be wrong.

Don't laugh to hard about those toilet paper oil filters..
Back in the day,my Dad had one on his 1963 GMC pickemup. About once a month or so,the old man would change out the roll of TP, and add another quart of new oil to the mix. I never new him to change the oil in that truck and he ran it so long, the State of Ohio had to staple another sheet of paper to the title so they could stamp it for his tags.(said it was back in the day!) I believe the name on that filter assembly was Frantz.

Yes, the TP oil filter was made by "Frantz" AND a couple of other companies.

They needed to be changed regularly. (otherwise they started to "channel"; make a path through the roll)

They used to be sold at summer fairs. My dad used one for several years.

I still have one; but I don't use it. I have it hanging on the garage wall as a conversation piece.

Theres a Frantz on the 66 Chrysler convertible that my mom drove 25 years. I am skeptical about its value but I leave it on there. It does soak up a LOT of nasty.

Mark,
That NAPA is less than 2 miles from my house, I didn't know you were on this side of town.
That Jerry guy is a trip. Every time I go in looking for stuff for my 55 Fairlane, he makes a remark, "OOOH, the old one, huh Boss?" And then he tells me how he used to have one way back and how great the 272 was and that he'd eat up all of the Chevys with it. He says this EVERY TIME I get anything for the car. I just play along like I haven't heard the story before, but he must have told me 25 times already.
I imagine we both have the same "price plan." I got a starter from them one time and the Assistant manager walked by as a new guy was ringing me out. He stopped and pointed at the screen and said to the counter guy, "Nope, he's here more often than you are, he gets THIS price."

So, either I'm a really good customer and they're trying to keep me, or they know that my cars are shit and they're trying to keep me. Either way, even if they were more expensive, they have helped me countless times.

Yea, I'm in Ahwatukee(shhh, it's a secret!). They're a great bunch of guys in there. I was in there a couple of weeks ago and some guy was looking for pushrods for a '58 chevy and they were telling him they didn't have them. so I said do you have a computer? Try Egge.com or Kanter, and the guy behind the says "Oh, yea, you'd know, wouldn't you!" I get to go behind the counter and pick up my own parts sometimes. I was in there last night getting some parts for the '50 Buick and they said "that's for a '56 desoto right?" Sometimes being known can be a pain...

Finally found a note laying around that may be of help here.

Can one of you parts store guys check out the AC P209, Motorcraft FL25 and Fram C4P filters. I think these may be Beehive cartridge replacements.

bttt guess I need to post this during the day for the day guys:)

I just took a new Beehive off the shelf and took the cartridge out of it and it has two numbers on it P4 and 050202MN2 (no Google hits). Also "Product of Mexico"

The measurements are 4" OD x 4 7/8" high and the holes on both ends have a rubber grommet with a 9/16" ID.

FWIW there is a small wire ring on the top so you can pull the cartridge out of the canister.

Dennis, The AC P209, Motorcraft FL25, Fram C4P, Champion Lab P4, Hasting LF101 and the Wix 51006 are all the same filter as far as my interchange shows.
