Need to replace my floor jack. I'm looking for something that's fairly decent.. better than the pep-boys specials and hopefully something that's low enough for lowered cars.
What are you guys using?

I've got a Allied 3 ton that I got at a Low-Buck tool outlet (like Harbor Freight) in 1992. It's work flawlessly, and with the cheapy rubber pad, starts at 5" from the floor.

If I had to buy a jack again I'd go with the harbour freight aluminum racing jack. Its low and its light enough to keep in your trunk. (got that idea from bondo slapper) they are on sale all the time for $150.

When you buy the Harbour Freight aluminum, tell me if you like a jack thats rated at 1500 lbs. Thats not even one ton. Its pretty but not a good buy unless you intend to leave it in your trunk. I'd like to know where to buy a GOOD jack that will work well for the next 20 years.

I'll have to mosey by Harbor Frieght and check it out. 1500 lbs does sound on the light side. My Mustang is pushing 3300 lbs and I'm sure my Jeep is a fair amount more than that. It would be know prob for the "T" as I doubt that it weighs more than 2000 lbs.

I just checked on the Harbor Freight website and they have aluminum floor jacks rated at 3000lbs for $149.99. for $10 more you can get it anodized in blue, red or yellow. For $229, they have a 2 ton aluminum jack.

check out the jacks at sears. they have some pretty good deals on craftsmans. i got a jack with two stands on sale for 129.00.
rix,
this is just the opposite of what you said you wanted, but i've been using the sam's $50 jack for about 10 years and can't complain. i'm sure a $300 jack would work smoother and look prettier, but for what it cost i sure can't complain.
just one opinion.

Hey - I have the H F alum jack and it kicks ass - it picks up either end my 46 from the center just fine. It also gets under my real low front end with no trouble. Most other jacks I looked at wouldn't.
It would not pick up the entire front end of a 70 F100 with a big block in it. One side at a time it was fine.

I've had a Craftsman floor jack for some time and my only complaint was that it was pretty slow, took many pumps to get the car up to jack stand height. This summer, my Son came by to rotate his tires one evening, as I have the jack and impact wrenches, etc. When he went to let his truck down off the jack stands, the handle disconnected from the valve that opens the cylinder to bleed of the pressure. We used a Cresent wrench and did what we needed to do to get him on his way. I ask him to take the jack back to Sears and exchange it. Without the receipt, he came back with a new jack, no questions ask...........I opened the box and in it was a jack, two decent jack stands, lug wrench, magnetic fender cover, wheel chocks, stool with castors and a pair of jumper cables! The jack was much faster and of much better quality, although it is made in China, and the mechanism to control the valve is a little different. Sears buys these from many different suppliers and I would assume that the spare parts are not interchangable because of the many configurations, but who really cares when you can axchange the entire unit. I have a teflon pad that I bought from California Car Cover and the thing works excellent. In my mind, it would be very difficult to match this deal anywhere else for the $99.00 it cost! The jack and jack stands are nice, the rest of the stuff would be good in a pinch, but how can you manufacture all this stuff and sell it for 99 bucks? Works for me guys.

Watch out for OTC jacks, they are real cagy about mixing imports into their selections. They import from the same source as the others and slap their name on it. I brought one of my imports onto a tool truck to show a guy selling OTC. He was super pissed when I ahowed him the metric sizes.
Here are a few jacks that seem to be big E Bay sellers, the aluminum is light enough to even ship to the West Coast at low rates.

I also own the 3.5 ton one listed above, paid $79 for it off EBAy over a year ago and it is one hell of a buy. Super duty and not a hint of problems.
I have one of the Griot's low profile jacks. This thing is only 1.5" tall at the lift point, it has a foot lift as well as the handle. It is rated at 4000lbs.It's a little pricey at $389.00 but you do get what you pay for.--TV PS It's Griot's Garage 800-345-5789 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I would have to second the suggestion about the Allied 3 ton, it was cheap, I've had it for about 10 years and the only thing I did was buy a $10 rubber pad to use instead of the cup.

I used to buy one of the generic 2 ton-ers a year, and I got tired of that, so last time I bought a Lincoln 2-1/2 ton from HF (around like $200) and It hasn't even so much as hiccupped in 4 years of heavy use.

i am very fond of lincons jacks. My trans jack , 2ton and 5 tons are all lincons. if i remember right i got them through Grangers. my 10 and 20 ton are napas but at that weight they are built tough as hell.

a buddy of mine had one... dark blue with yellow wheels and handle. It was real low up front. He used it at the saturn dealership we worked at. I think he had it 5 years or so without fail.
Snap On maybe?

Two things I suggest you consider are lifting height and length ( or reach). Some jacks I see only rise up to 14" or so; that's not high enough for my lard ass on creeper. It also seems the jacks are not as long as they used to be; this matters if you are trying to place the jack under the differential of a '62 Impala, not to mention that the handle will smack your knuckles into the gas tank while you're laying on your belly trying to pump the jack handle. All of the inexpensive jacks I've seen have these problems.
