View Full Version : Swingin Pedals for a Shoebox Chevy

I am getting ready to put a Muncie 4 speed in my 52 Chevy that now has an auto trans. In the process, I would like to move the brake master from under the floor up to the firewall. I also plan a hydraulic clutch, so that master will be there too. This will give me more room to run my exhaust over the K-member, allowing me to lower the car some more.

My question is: does anybody know of a good fitting swingin' pedal setup that would include the clutch pedal? Or maybe some to avoid? I am thinking boneyard parts, not $600 worth of aftermarket.

FatHack did a tech post on this a few weeks ago. I think he used an S-10 booster and pedal.

Cool. Thanks! I'll see if I can look that up.

If you want to keep it all inside the cowl, 70's Dodge vans had a 90° setup like the $600 one Kugel sells.

I know tri-5 (55,6,7)Chevy will do what you ask and you can get replacement bushings and a brake swith aftermarket. Four bolts through the firewall direct to the master. I will bet any of the 50's and 60's stuff will do. You can even get new foot pads for those. Danchuck and Ecklers for rebuild parts. Find it in the junk yard.

Yep, I used 80s S10 pedals, booster and master cylinder to put swinging pedals in my 49 Chevy. The booster and master cylinder are firewall mounted now. It was pretty easy, but I ended up not using the clutch pedal...just the brake.

I might still have some pics on file...but look up my original post for more info.

Thanks, FatHack! I found the one thread earlier, but I am glad to see some pics. I might have access to one o' them S10 setups.

You think there woulda been room to keep the clutch pedal? Do S10s even have hydraulic clutches?

If you weren't picky about keeping the underhood vent tube in tact on the driver's side, I'm sure the clutch pedal could be made to work (on the S10 assembly).

The very first S10s used a garbage cable clutch, but all of them after about 1984 were hydraulic, and those are the ones you want for the swap.

If I were hell-bent on using the clutch half of the S10 pedal assembly, I'd have removed the vent tube and mounted the whole deal a little lower...it would have solved a few problems.

But, I'm going with an automatic...so Damn The Torpedos...full speed ahead! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm with Tokyo on this one.

But nevertheless, most if not all (pre-'93) 4.3L V-6/ manual transmission equipped S-10's had a hydraulic clutch set-up that I'm pretty sure you could adapt to your car.

Getting the T-5 and entire pedal asembly including the clutch master/slave cylinder would be the hot ticket.

Stay away from the manual clutch set-up that these trucks (most early 2.8L V.6 S-10s at least) used at all costs. They used an extremely shitty braided cable and plastic "pawl" that would strip itself of its gears very easily.

Hack beat me to the punch on the clutch stuff.

Since you're using the Muncie, you might want to look into a bellhousing and slave cylinder from a mid-'60s Chevrolet truck. I know Big Ric is using one of these in his '40 with the Super T-10 and it works great.

You'll still have to do a little engineering for the pedal, but it shouldn't be too tough. You might be able to adapt the S-10 pedals and clutch master to work with that slave cylinder as well.

It's a strictly regional Texan colloquialism. they never heard of a Ford shoebox it seems http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I saved the clutch pedal half and stuff like the reservoir and line for the clutch slave cylinder...yours if you want it, but you'll want the WHOLE assembly from another donor truck if you go through with this swap.

(The partial assembly may just give you an idea...something to hold in position and see what it will look like. PM me if you want it...I'll ship it when I can afford to!)

I beg to differ Doc.

And I blame the magazines for spreading the misnomer that anything but '49-51 Ford passenger cars can be referred to as 'Shoeboxes.' http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

49-54 Chevs are a wee bit curvy to really be called "Shoeboxes"...

(Like calling Lynda Carter 'masculine'! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

I always thought CHEVY Shoeboxes were Tri-Fives???

If it's a SHOEBOX, then it must be a FORD.

Would the S10 T-5 hold up to a mild small block?

And thanks to everyone's input! Much appreciated!
