well, simple for somebody hopefully...

do 49-54 chevy tie rod ends have the same 7° taper as an old ford tie rod end? is the 7° angle standard or is each tie rod end different?

thanks,
ed

thanks for the reply.... so let me ask you another question -- could i use ford tie rod ends on 49-54 chevy steering arms?

thanks,

i think you could, but you would have to make the tapered hole deeper. this would be done with a taper reamer , i have one if you need it done, or maybe some local machine shop has one.

hmmm... here's the situation...

i need to come up with a drag link and tie rod for my hot rod.

for the tie rod, i'm using '52 chev spindles w/ the stock tie rod ends. problem is, i can't find a pre-made tie rod and i'm trying to get around buying a pair of left/right 9/16 taps. we're trying to stay on a budget here. if i could go to the ford ends, i can get everything i need for cheap thru speedway.

the drag link is an even stickier situation, or maybe more flexible depending on how you want to look at it. my pitman arm has a ball on the end that i may grind off and drill a thru hole. i have no steering arm.

have any ideas?

9/16" sounds a little small...are you sure they are not 5/8- 18 thread ? that's what i thought chevies were

here's what i think:

(1) you could use ford tie rods ends in the chevy steering arms , i could retaper them for you if you wish. i can also make the tie rod using 7/8" DOM .188 wall tubing...i have the material and the right and left 11/16-18 taps

(2) stay with the chey tie rods ends and have a custom tie rod made....if the tie rod ends are 5/8-18...i have right and left taps for that too

(3) make the drag link like what ever tie rod you do...the pitman arm can be drilled out and tapered for which ever tie rod end you decide on

you don't have the steering arms? you mean the ones that bolt on the chevy spindles? gonna be hard to retaper if you don't have them...or do you mean something else?

Charlie,

Do you have the steering arm from any of those? (not the pitman arm, I need the arm that attaches to the driverside spindle). I'm house shopping with the wife tonight, but I'll try to sneak out to the garage and get a pic of my front setup.

36 - Check your PM's.

Moog tie rod ends, part number ES-323-R & ES-323-L are from Chevys and have the 5/8"-18 thread. My guess is they will fit your '49-'54 Chev steering arms. I'm using them with '36 Ford spindles...the taper is a few thousandths smaller than the Ford so I'll make a steel shim to compensate.

Thanks SJ Fast. I will look into those tie rod ends and see if they're cheaper than 9/16" taps.
