I am using a 9" rear out of a 57 Ford in my '33. The backing plates are ok but I had to break the drums off and can't seem to find a source other than Kanter for them. They get $95 each for em plus I will still need to come up with shoes and hardware.
I had Currie add a flange and redrill the axles for 5.5" bolt pattern which isn't a big deal I can just redrill the drums but they also can set me up with brakes for $300 with backing plates, shoes, hardware and drums.
Is there any other options for these rears? I am no Ford 9" expert so any input would be appreciated.

If your 9 inch rear end has the big bearings...........you are in luck......just get the backing plates, drums and all the assorted pieces from a Ford F100........69 or so. They have the 5.5 wheel pattern also. They are also 'self-adjusting'...which is a good thing http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
57 Ford rear ends came both ways..small or large bearing ....

I think 5.5 is stock Ford pickup pattern. Should be easy to find drums........OLDBEET

Well as usual I am not very lucky. I have the small bearing.
So now what options do I have?
Do you think I can modify the pickup brakes to work with mine? I could cut the centers out of my backing plates and weld them into the larger ones……?

the small bearing 9" has 3/8" mounting holes that are 2 inchs by 3-3/8" with a 2.835" axle hole.....i beleive this is the same as the 8" ford rear. has anyone tried to see if they will work?
you mentioned that you had a flange added to the axle and the pattern changed to 5-1/2".....i had this done too on a `57 9 inche rear and had a slight problem....the axle flange ws too big for the flat mating surface in the brake drum...i had to turn down the OD of the axle flange to fit inside the drum

Early Bronco had small bearing rears with a 5.5 bolt pattern. There were also 10" drums available on them, which will work with passenger car backing plates.
8" and small bolt pattern 9" backing plates will interchange.

If you need more or too much info, in about the last year Street Rodder did a multi issue article detailing every conceivable variant of 9" brake and axle end, stock and aftermarket. Someone you know must have them stacked up.
Eyeball, I have that Streer Rodder 9" rear article. Let me know if you need copies.

$300 ain`t too bad for aftermarket rear disc.
I got that set up on a 9" in my `34.
Basicly they have a plate that fits on the axil to
bolt the calerpers to.Not sure about the rotors, but
the calipers and pads are from an 80 to 85 Buick Reverair
or Caddy Seville.They have emer.brake hardware(I discarded)
on em.
Or Lincoln Versei (sp) has rear disc and somewhat narrower rear.
Good Luck...JR
