Does this look stupid?

Here is the poop.

Hole is drilled for the gas filler through the fender.
I do not want to fill it or move it, and did not want to run the filler through the rumble seat.

I don't mind the fact that is comes through the fender it is the angle at which it does that has me wondering.

The filler is steel welded to 2"stainless and I could change the angle of the head of the filler to match the contur of the fender.

What do you think?

The car is beautiful but that gas filler is very distracting. When I looked at the pic my eye went to it immediately and it's all I saw. I'd try to get it to blend in with the contour of the fender. I know it's probably a pain in the ass to fix it, but I think it will be worth it.

Reangle the filler neck so it is more inline with the fender then jb weld a nice 50's style racing monza flip cap on it then it will be the dogs danglies................Marq

i bet if you paint it body color it will be hardly noticable..

however i think that originally those cars had the fuel filler as part of the taillight assembly ? the coolest trick i have ever seen was the guy who had his 36 taillights hinged at the front edge and flipped the driver side up to get at the fuel tank filler..
course for all i know it could have been a stock item?

I think if you reangle it and tuck the cap close to the rubber than all will be well.

I plan on painting it body color.

If I play with it I can tuck it right up to the fender with just the cap and about 1/4 inch of neck showing.


How hard is it to weld stainless?

Can someone phot shop it for me?

I would change the angle of the filler so the lid surface is more in contour of the fender. I think it looks alittle dorky setting out that far too. shorten it up some.

Stainless is easy to weld. Even though I wouldn't condone it you can weld stainless with mildsteel wire and not sacrifice strength.

Would it be impossible to hinge that taillight and put it behind that? It looks pretty freaky.. but I agree, body color and angle will improve a LOT..

You've got a nice paint job, so welding sure doesn't make sense. How about carefully opening up the hole in the fender, seal off the new opening with a grommet/larger rubber gasket, then recessing the cap flush with the fender.
Drill some holes in the cap. Make a compact spanner type tool which fits in the holes. Keep the tool on your keychain.

don't get the cap to close to the fender or your fingers are going to be wearing on that paint everytime you get gas unless your not going to worry about that

Well... That's a whole bunch for yes it's ugly as crap.

My concern about redoing the filler kneck was making sure #1 it would still fill, and #2 making sure the weld was enough to keep the gas from leaking out.

I gotta say I like Mike 51's idea.

I would have to come up with a way to secure the filler to the back of the fender.

If I run it through the fender the grommet will do it for me.

to follow up on mikes51 suggestion you could easily get any lid off an old harley and flush mount it.I just seen it done on a site last night but on a bike.The guy just turned a piece on a lathe that the original lid mount off a junk harley tank cound be welded in soit would mount flush and he was able to use any stock blade type harley gas cap on it.I can find and post a link if you'd like.........

looks kinda weird-[also it will empty itself] when parked on a little left slope....I had a 35 Ford coupe and its stock location even higher would do it bad.

Dooley, take it from me, you're going to get gas sloshing out of there with its low location. If it were mine, I'd get one of those Hagan kits that opens to reveal a NASCAR style opening. It would be easy to blow in paint on one fender.
Not meaning to hijack your post but does anyone out there know how I can prevent gas from sloshing out of a stock '36 gas cap? I've put a new gasket on and it still spills out over the fender.

The gas neck I have is a threaded aluminum cap with a rubber seal. I have to vent the line to use it. This way gas won't spill out.


36 Couper try Rock Valley Ford parts, they sell all kinds of gas necks.
The one like I have would work for your application as well.
