Are there any easy ways to find out if the nailhead I just got is a 401 or 425? It's in a 64 Wildcat and is supposed to be the original engine. Any help appreciated! Max
There should be numbers stamped on the front of the motor look around area between valley cover and the thermostate housing.

I think the 401's were blue green and the 425's Gold?
I might have made that up though.....
But being a 64 it is probably a 401.
Hey could one of you buick freaks post that website with all the nailhead info? I'm putting on some 322 head gaskets and need the specs.

I think that the color was a year thing, not a size thing. The blue green motors were from whatever year up to 65, and (I think) the 66 motors were red & the gold ones were the older motors.
The 425 in my 65 Riv is blue green.
And Max, to make it easy for you, just look at the lip in front of the valley pan on the left. Look for these letters -
KT (401)
KW (425)
KX (425) 2x4
Good luck!

I would guess you probably have a 401, they are more common and more likely to be in a Wildcat.

Thanks guys, it looks like I have a KT 401 in the old Wildcat and a fine running one to boot! Max
