I'm kind of a dumb ass with computers.
I recently purchased a new computer and I need to get the photos off of the old computer. I can't seem to find a good method to do this

Old computer
A turd with Windows 98 and a floppy. I can't get it to save to a thumb drive, tried to install a rewritable CD drive and cannot get it to save to that either (borrowed from work) (does it need a set-up disk?)

New computer:
Window XP with CD/DVD writer. Lots of "HP" 2048MB 300gig hard drive.

I have a Linksys cable DSL router to get email and internet to each computer. Can I easily network the computers do I need a network cards? They don't find eachother now....

Or can I move the photos to a photosharing site, and move them from there to the new computer? I have about a 1Gig of photo's not too many.

Take the computer to someone?

Any other ideas?

You do have some options here:

If you don't mind spending a few bucks, you can get a USB to IDE adapter for you old hard drive and just connect it to the new PC. Basically you'd be making a giant thumb drive. This is an easy, low-tech option and the instructions that come with the adapter will be all you'll need. $30 at Best Buy or something is all I'd pay.

The idea of networking 'em is a good one. Does your DSL modem allow you to connect both computers at to it at the same time? If so, you can look up how to set up a small home network in Google or shoot me a PM and I'll walk you through it. It's not too difficult. Here's a link to start with: ="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/wired.mspx"

You can also open up one of the cases to see if your IDE cable (what connects the motherboard to the hard drive) to see if you have another connection on the cable. This will allow you to connect the second drive to the computer. You can then start it up and transfer the files to the new hard drive...you may have to change the jumper settings on the drive to determine which to boot from, but in most cases they'll be set to cable-select which means the computer will automatically recognize the second drive. Make sure your PCs are unplugged from the wall before opening anything up. In fact, check out this link...it's more complete than my explanation: http://tech.yahoo.com/gd/adding-a-second-internal-hard-drive-to-your-pc/2988

Hope that helps...sorry if I got too techie.

if your new case will let you install the another hard drive its probably the best option, if it fits in there you'll have an additional drive to store your junk and all of your old junk right there for you.

networking isnt too bad, yes both computers need network cards, plug them both into the same router or sometimes new computers come with 2 network card connections and you can plug your old computer into it.

go to start/control panel/ in classic view go to network setup wizard, go through the steps, the only thing that really matters is the network name, as long as both computers are on the same network name they "should" see each other.

you'll need to turn on file sharing, my computer/ right click on the drive/properties/sharing/yes you'll take the risk/enable sharing and take any risks it asks for at this point.

Now you just opened up your computer to the outside world so once your done transfering the files turn off file sharing. If your really worried about it unplug the wire that connects your modem to the outside world and keep the 2 computers attached to each other.
