My old speedo cable was a bit messed up, so I replaced it-housing and all. I back the car out and I've got a nice red puddle in the garage. The source of the leak? Right where the speedo cable plugs into the tranny. It's coming right out of the cable itself, right at the part where the metal meets the cable housing.
So, I loosen up the fitting, and the leak stops. Any idea? Teflon tape on the pipe threads http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif???!!!

I would pull the gear carrier and replace all the o-rings. If you put teflon tape on the threads you are just bandaiding a problem that would be easily fixed right the first time.

Teflon tape.
Pipe threads seal on the roots and crests of the thread.
tolerances for angles, lenghts, heights ect. cannot be manufactured to tolerances which will seal with out sealant.
(at least thats what my tube fitters manual says http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

I just had the same problem. Mine was coming out of the kickdown cable. I just loaded it up with RTV black silicon and it worked perfect. I would try teflon tape and then try and seal the outside with RTV. It's not pretty but it stopped the leak.
