does anybody know for sure if a 409 has different spacing[right to left] different than a small block?
Also are they the same spacing from the center of side mount to rear edge of block?[16"SBC]?????
i CAN GET the total length as its here but wasnt sure of these measurements.........
They are shorter in overall height, and wider than a sbc ( but i believe the motor mount spacing is the same from drivers to pass as the sbc). If i remember right, the block at the mounts, has the same dimentions, but due to the different rod angle, (67 degree *i think* rather than 90) the blocks spread out more as you get closer to the deck. Which is why its shorter as well..
The distance from the center of the motor mount to the bell housing flange is the same. The big difference is in front of the motor mounts..
I have a 409 and a 348 in the garage now, and when i got the first one i was measuring it up to see the differences of them.
I was thinking of using the 348 in my 33 pick up in place of the sbc in it..

I was thinkin that they were but hated to ASSUME!.
I know ill need more clearances frt and rear-its gonna be fenderless and hoodless so it oughta be easy.
The rubber mounts were heavier for the big block. The mounting brackets on the frames were the same. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

W engines are about 1 1/2" longer than smallblocks, about the same wider than smallblocks, and about an inch shorter in height than smallblocks. But they will bolt right into any standard Chevrolet V8 motormounts. And yes... from the motor mount to the rear flange where the transmission hooks up, they are the same as a smallblock. They also use the same flywheels, starters, and all that crap. They weigh 650lbs each complete. Best source of information/parts is www.348-409.com. (http://www.348-409.com.) That place will give you all the specifics... the other good one is www.mr409.com. (http://www.mr409.com.) That site tells you everything and sells you everything. They even tell you what interchanges with what (smallblock oil pumps, rod bearings, and certain valve springs etc). Have fun!

348/409 engines will bolt onto SBC/BBC bellhousings and frame mounts, but as noted...their external dimensions may create some problems with fan spacing, exhaust clearance, etc in some chassis.
(Spent all last night working on Donzie's Tub...now equipped with a 348 bolted to the old SBC trans and frame mounts!!! Pics someday!!!)
