Does anyone have a experience with trying to convert their project right hand drive. What steering box would I use? What do you guys in the countries that drive on the right side use on your rods? It would be for my t bucket style rod I am getting started on. it there a RHD Corvair box? Thanks

Living in a country that has RHD cars the choice of steering boxes is seemingly endless. A bit like the choice you have for building LHD.

Look at some of the service vehicles that were built for the postal service in RHD. Also look at steering box mountings. While most steering boxes are mounted to the inside of the chassis rail some are mounted to the outside. This makes a LHD steering box that is mounted to the outside of the chassis rail suitable for mounting to the inside of the chassis rail on a RHD car.

I guess the bottom line is that you are going to have to spend a bunch of time looking at steering boxes. Time to pack a lunch and go visit your local Pick A Part. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A 1960's right hand drive VW bus steeringbox works as a left hand drivebox in a rod, so I assume a left hand one is OK for a right hand drive rod.

I will have to do some checking into that. Do you have a pic of the setup?

24ratrod, What you need is an early 1950's Studebaker box. The photo shows one in "The U.S.Mule II" it is a mirror image of a normal box. Studebaker ran a link to a bell crank in the stock setup. I'll post the original literature photo after this one.

I forgot to mention that that box is mounted to the Model A Ford frame that is grafted onto the stock MG frame. This is the stock setup in a Studebaker.

Did this box come on any certian models or all the studes? Would I have to use the stude column? Anyone have one laying around?

I found a couple VW boxes on e bay but I was not sure what would work. Thare seemed to be a few different types.

As previously mentioned above, the common ones we use here (in Australia...)are VW kombi (used mainly in buckets etc).

For the later model rods that preffer cross steer (90 degrees to chassis rails, as opposed to side steer, parralel with chassis rails) Datsun 200B/Stanza (don't know a US equivalent) or a HQ Holden (Aussie GM car, very common, cheap, and easy to come by......in Australia http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif).

I expect that none of this info will help your endeavours as they would be hard to find in your neck of the woods.

But hey, you asked what we commonly use....

Cheers,

A side steer is what I would like. The Stude loks promising if I could find years and models. The VW may work as well if the stude won't work.

Maybe I missed something earlier, but why do you want RHD?

Could this work. It looks like in the pic that the pitman arm would be on the outside of the frame. How are they stock?

Why RHD? I thought it would be something a little different. Also the look on peoples faces when sitting in traffic would be fun.

Does anyone know if I could use a vega box for this? Would it steer me in the right direction?

I think a Vega or Corvair box used as a downward draglink steering would go the right way for RHD. Sixties Mopar would be right for upward draglink RHD.

Couldn't you run a rack flipped? Or am I missing something?

it is being mounted on a t bucket chassis. a rack wouldn't look right.
