View Full Version : How to tell if you have been having too much fun
With your Hotrod.
Needless to say I will be needing a new gear set. As a person who likes to look on the brighter side of adversity http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif I am looking for a set of 3.08's now. I want to move the 33 into the 12's. My current gear set is 2.79, great for cruising but I want to go faster in the quarter. Best ET so far has been 13.38. What you got?

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that it is for a 10 bolt Chevy rear. A complete center section (as it were) would be cool as I have to replace the spiders and shims and all that. Any tips or hints on the install would be appreciated as well. I have changed the axles plenty of times but never the center set on the Chevys. Anything to look out for?
Need to get her back together for Paso and the Antique Nationals at the end of the month.
Thanks

[qu My current gear set is 2.79, Best ET so far has been 13.38.
Jesus lets see more pics of the rest of this car 13.38 with 2.79 look out with a set of low gears that thing should really fly
Yeah Killer I was thinking of you after that happened, although I have to admit that it wasn't nearly as spectacular as yours. It started with some random noises that I couldn't pin down and then went out in a Walmart parking lot at 5 mph! When it's time to go it's time to go I guess.
Doc I will check the records and see what year it is. I think it is 65 or so but could be wrong.
As for the ratio, when I am going 100 mph the engine is at 3200rpm. According to the math that gives me a 2.79 ratio with 29 inch tall tires. Yeah I know I should go with higher 3's but then I am afriad I will lose some of my formerly reliable daily driving. I have put over 70 thousand miles on her in the last 6 years mostly without a hitch so I am trying to stay that way. Going faster is drawing me though so a gear change now that I have broken them seems like a good idea. Heads are next with a set of 2.02 castings from a Vette that I picked up from Lotus a while back. I am still pushing my agenda of a daily driven Hotrod, that although it has an SBC it is not "stock for reliabilitys sake". It is stroked and bored and I make changes to it to go faster but still keep her on the road but soon I will have to start making bigger changes as the tech guys at the track are starting to want more from me as I creep closer to the 12's. I will have to install a master cutoff switch and a driveline hoop very soon. After that I will be blurring the line a little too much for my goals of a street car so we'll see where that takes me.
The rail is down still getting the rebuild. Lots of changes in my life in the last year so I have had to take some things a little slower. Cash flow and priorities, but it will be back together one of these days and I will start my search for 9.60's. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hey Shag....
sorry to see your 'dilemma'...
it'll be even better now though..!!
So where'd you find such a bitchin' looking cover..??
I've been looking for one that fits a '68 Camaro 10-bolt,
but with the wider-set fins just like that one..!!
Take it easy..!! -Jack

way easier to put a whole axle under there than trying to change out the gear set. a few special tools needed to set the pinion depth properly and to get the proper preload on the side carrier bearings. those rear ends use a shim pack to set the preload and to adjust the backlash.
have a shop do it or replace the whole thing. not a job i would attempt. have done it in the past but had the equipment available.

What these guys said re: having someone do it. These types are a bear to do in the car & get right.
I'd also be tempted to go a bit lower - 3.25 or 3.50 (or whatever the equivalent Chevy ratios are).
Naturally, I'd recommend a 9"! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I think I found you a whole rearend. 3:08's. Early 70's Camaro.
I'll know more ($$$) tomorrow.
Thanks Killer, I sent you an E-Mail.
The rear is supposedly out of a 70-75 Chevelle/Nova. I have used axles out of mid to late 60's El Caminos before so the width is a stock one. It measures 53 inches backing plate to backing plate.
One day it will get a Ford 9" or maybe a quick change.
ESnaky6 I got the rear cover from a friend of my brother in law. He makes them out of a shop in Pismo Beach. I have called my Bro to tell him I need a new one and he will hook me up with the guy tomorrow. I will pass on contact info when I get it.
