Was starting to Put in pipes from collector today and said to myself "SHARE" so Im glad to take a minute to get to write.

Most exhaust leaks and rattles are caused by the exhaust swinging off the hangers that are located well past rear of transmission working and moving at a diffirent rate than the motor.

I started to always make a solid mount off the rear of the transmission ,using the bolts off tail section or even the bolts that hold the rubber mount to trans body, I make a oval pad or saddle by (cutting it from same size pipe as exhaust) and weld to pipe, then small tubing 1/4-3/8 to a flat plate bolted off trans, sometimes its two piecies of tubing "V'D" to my tranny bracket ,no rubber ,solid.

Then it makes the weak links (header to block, header flange ,donut, to tube) a MAN then hang with isulators or rubber hangers back at mufflers and at back like normal.

the motor and trans are connected as one so make the headers think they are connected too, never had an exhaust loosening problem again ,rattles are gone too.

Weird I never see anyone else do it but us. by the way the oval saddles are to spread the load ,if we just welded tubes to our exhaust it would rip a hole in it ,its like a big washer for seat belts to bolt to floor.

dont have a picture , try to get one up. HELLFIRE USA

Thanks for the tip. I have more problems with the exhaust on Big Olds then anything else. Major leak right now that I need to take care of. Haven't looked yet, don't know where it's coming from. Hopefully I'll be able to incorperate your tip to solve my problem for good. Nice and tight, yep, that's the ticket, nice and tight up there. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good advice, Cole!

I always went kinda overboard making up exhaust hangers and anchors for my cars...I have this pet peeve about rattles and the possibility of it falling off...or hanging too low!

My theory was always that a proper exhaust system should be heard, but not seen! (On my old mullet cars...nothing looked tackier to my eyes than seeing the exhaust system dangling six inches below the floor like so many Bozos do it!).

Great post! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

From what I've experienced, there were large discrepancies in the expansion and contraction rate that causes a shearing of the gaskets.

This is especially true if you use a combination of stainless and regular steel.(Yes I do have some stainless underneath! I'm to much of a "pansey" to have rust falling in my eyes when I need to work under the car). http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

How do you account for the expansion and contraction rate? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The 63-up Corvette uses the same trick. Chevy used a formed plate sandwiched between the trans mount and trans.(above the rubber). The plate is formed into saddles on each end to which the pipe is clamped. Your excecution is much cleaner.

So, you are saying that the WHOLE exhuast doesn't need to flex, just the part behind the tranny?

All the 80s S-10s used the same deal, as well as 5.0 Mustangs if I remember right. (I'm too lazy to look under the wife Mustang right now to be sure)

The explanation makes perfect sense. I always wondered why they did it that way, because it makes tranny R&R a pain.

Yup, Mother Mopar's been doin it since the 60's. Along with many others as noted. Glad ya thought to bring it to the attention of a few other knuckleheads who woulda missed the trick the OEM's been onto for decades! One of those things most take for granted when they already know it...

I did this. (see pic) and mounted the rest simi-ridged using brackets with rubber bushings and brakets welded to the system and no hangers. The engine in my roadster has a wild solid lifter cam and the flex couplers take up all the vibration
