Well I'm finally putting my motor back together (351c). I had to replace the oil pump. And there was a lot of junk at the bottom of the pan. The pieces were black plastic ( real thin and small) and also a few lead shavings. I figure they are lead cause they are not metallic. Anyone have an idea where they might have come from? Timing gears maybe? I bought a new timing set and everything is metal. Still have to throw those in. The timing chain had a lot of slack in it. So anyone have any idea? Thanks in advance. Hope it is not too serious as Paso is just around the corner. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

The black plastic pieces are most likely Valve Stem seals, or what is left of them.
The metal particals, most likley aluminum....can be from the timing set gears.
Did you check the rod and main bearings while you were in there? Could also be the cam bearings........
Bearings are the first items to take a shit with out proper oil pressure and volume.

Yeah I was kinda thinking that the plastic might be from the stock timing gear the one on the cam. I'll find out tomorrow when I put the new timing set on. I'll pop the valve covers off and hand crank the motor over and see what's hapening there. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Don't crank the motor over with the timing chain off! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Naw don't worry I'm gonna put the new timing set on first. Then check if I have any bent valves, etc. I know better than that. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif LOL. Thanks though.

Well I've got an update if anyone cares. The battleship is back on the road and runs better that ever. I replaced the oil pump. Put new timing set on as the old one was the original nylon one and had 3 teeth broken off and 5 others cracked. So I found out where the plastic shit at bottom of pan came from http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif. Replaced the roll pin on the dist. Now the truck runs like a bat outta hell http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. My guess is that tis mtor has never been rebuilt, or that it has only had a head job. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif So look out Paso here I come. Thnks for all the suggestions the H.A.M.B. kicks ass. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
