View Full Version : Gold Chain Me!

**DONOTDELETE**

As deep as my traditional loving roots run I was raised with Street Rodders and still have a deep love for well built and clean STREET RODS. I have a shot at this one for a REALLY RIGHT price and hope to drive it home from Texas in a couple weeks. Any body got a good deal going on gold chains? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

1988 called and they want their dechrome-job back... after you give it to them, and perhaps un-monochrome it, it won't really look too streetrodderish, just clean. Maybe do the fenders/runningboards black? (glossy black, of course) Just put the mexiblanket over that velour...

**DONOTDELETE**

Sorry BurnedOut, but the only things painted on here that Henry didn't paint at the factory is the head and taillight bezels. I knew some people might have trouble thinking outside the "billy box." Yeah, maybe some black primer, Mexi-blankets and red steelies would make this "RIGHT"- NOT! Funny, I did that already in 1989!!! Talk about dated- black prime and red steelies- it's the new PASTEL! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I'm also planning on "Tommy the Greek" striping- black centers with white outlines on a few body lines, hood louvers and tailgate lettering. A chrome shell and chrome reverses with black bias' would make it totally 60's- they were TOTALLY mono back then too.

JimA-
Good score!
Doesn't look THAT "streedrod" to me...
(No billet taillights, gay-ass color schemes,
I don't see any hoodscoop either)
It's too simple to be a "streetrod" I think-
It's not my style, but I was prepared for MUCH WORSE!

I say get chrome wires and dual pinstripe whitewalls for it!
Then you're set!

NO- I got it at POSEURPROOF. No black primer, no mexican blankets, no iron crosses, no bailing wire, no guys that have been rodding since they stopped skate boarding 3 years ago, no disturbingly loud cars with a whopping 120 horse power running on 6 sloppy cylinders, no oil downs every time the car ATTEMPTS to come to a halt- POSEURPROOF. I'll keep everyone posted on POSEURPROOF IV- the first three were FREE-attended by myself only, but I'm going to open the next one up to two lucky people- registration will be $1360.00 per car, but for that you get the "small show/punk rock" vibe everyone loves so much. We will be bashing all other events and making fun of cars and people we don't like- should be a HOOT! Only shiny street rods types should apply.

HA!- Spectators??? Who would want to come see this crap? Like I said- only 2 entries for this first one- but I'm looking at "selling out" and finding a place that would hold about 5,000 ANTI-POSEUR vehicles in the future. Any vehicles sporting 10-inch (or greater) channel jobs, ridiculously tall shifters with giant-sized shift knobs, more than 5 "scenester" decals, 9-or more carburetors, imitation "monkey fur" interiors, FAUX ANYTHING, crooked drunken pinstriping, alcohol of any type (we don't hold our liquor well) will be mocked mercilessly at the front gate and denied entrance from POSEURPROOF. We are a covert STREET ROD organization hoping to bring both style and safety BACK to hot rodding. Viva la POSEURPROOF! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

........so, I'm lookin at the photo and natcherly, I'm thinking of what I would do to it if I owned it. The shiny paint makes me a little "nervous" but I could re-learn to rinse and chamois every morning. The wheels are nice but I'd hafta go with painted steelies and center caps...the tires can stay. The lights would stay painted but I might go with chrome/polished bezels. Some tasteful striping on the rear axle housing would be ok but no more for me...
I think that's all. I've seen the car in person and talked with the owner [If it's the same truck and I believe it is] at Americruise in Lincoln about 3 years ago. I glanced up to see it cruising across the grass and I was knocked out! I hadda talk to the guy about his truck. He was gracious and you could tell he was used to answering questions regarding the little truck. I lusted for it. Congrats! It's almost perfect, IMHO.

Beautiful vehicle, if it were me, I wouldn't change a thing. Somebody had good taste when they built the truck. Traditional, the wheels certainly fit my understanding of the word. Those wheels were being used when most of the folks on this board were still "shit'in green"!

The new owner always makes a few - or a lot of - changes and then it's his car/truck.

I think I'd like a back bumper on it.
For the protection capabilities mainly, but a horizontal style line wouldn't hurt the back view.

That said, great truck.
Get it, enjoy it and don't worry about what others think.
Doesn't look like you're too worried anyway.

I do have a question though.
Aren't you about six foot tall?
As I remember it, this style truck doesn't have a whole lot of legroom.

It's actually a fresh truck finished a couple months ago with less than 500 miles. I know there are other trucks that look like it because I have seen them and loved them for years too. It's actually Orange (straight toner).
Sorry if I upset the "Black Primer Army", I really stilll like it in some situations, but when somebody tries to make a lame car cool with "instant attitude" (black prime, mexi-blankets and red wheels) it's pretty sad. Like I said, I put a ton of work into my '32 in 1990 with black prime (actually flattened black laquer), mexican blanket and red '35 spokes. But that WAS the begining of the trend in 1989- the same time that pastel colors with big drippy wet graphics was "IN". I try to think forward and really like cars like Russ Eggleston's '29 Dodge in the KC GG post from Ryan. He went way retro without using the "standard formula." Bravo Russ!

That's a nice truck! Gotta agree with C9, that truck needs a rear bumper and a front one would balance it or at least nerf bars. I also think ramhorns would give it an older buidup flavor. Are those smooth running boards? I'd go with stockers there too.Too bad it's not a tudor sedan, the whole family could go with ya!

I have a '28 Tudor, this is one of those "Buy it cheap, have fun for 6 months driving it, sell for profit to finish '28 Tudor" deals. Meanwhile I will have a little fun since out of all my projects I've never owned a painted and upholstered- even driving for that matter, street rod. I bought some really nice fenders for my Tudor this weekend.

Don't worry, it looks like a repop, the real ones have a dimple in the top where the nut goes, and the front (where the filter can be seen on this one),is solid. If someone cut this thing up, they went through a lot of trouble.

Should take a while before they catch on, and before they realize that after we let this thing grow to it's full potential and we clog up all the fun which happens after a little grass roots deal fully matures (right Kirk?) they will basically be attending a GREEDYGUYS event, just that it will be under the anti banner. Not like all of those other shows that pick the pockets of all of those non-working fat cats. And we can have the anti-pro's pick where we can find some guy that doesn't really know anything about cars come in and tell us which car he likes best - then we'll just keep it a secret and not tell anybody - because giving people awards for hard work on their cars is what all of those "other" shows do. Jim, I like it, but like a lot of other guys, I'd add some chrome.

Actually, I'd add as much Deluxe model chrome as I could. Bumpers front and rear, door handles (look like they're chrome already), handle bezels, front and rear light bezels, front light bar, front grille, windshield frame, etc...

I'd paint the rear taillight stands black. I'd modify the bumper irons to lower the front bumper if it doesn't look low enough. I'd consider adding rubber to the running boards too.

As far as JimA predicting future trends, I believe that he said the seventies retro style, Early Times style cars were going to be coming back in style a few years ago.

Oh, a keep the Halibrands. They look good with the orange paint. Not everyone should run Buick wires.

SON OF A BITCH!!! I never thought I'd see one of my MOST favorite Model A's of all time on the HAMB! I have a ton of pictures of that car (as well as every other car ever in the Early Times). That is what I am building for myself, except mine will be a Tudor version of THAT car! That's the baddest stance ever given to a 29 Model A. Got all the tricks from all the Early Timers years ago. My dad's a member too. Yeah, I don't care if it ever comes back mainstream, but the clean looks and badass sneaky stance of the Early Times cars will always be my FAVORITE! Thanks Modernbeat.

I NEED them! That's the next project. I've got a lot of the parts collecting done, but I promised myself that I'll finish the modified before I start on the next one.

And yep, I think the Early Times style cars will be back in favor. Good stance, simple but clean paint, leave the crazy stuff alone, and the signature Skylark wires. If you were into Volkswagens you'd recognize that as the formula for Cal-Look VWs which were built around the same time and place that the Early Times guys were doing their thing with early Fords. Must have been something in the water...

Seriously, what will it take to get photos or color copies...

I'm in the middle of a hectic travel schedule and my Early Times stuff is all packed up in another part of the state. Any questions I can answer in the mean time please feel free to ask. That car still exist exactly like that in San Diego. Fat Jack was responsible for the build, and NO ONE built them lower than him. Early Times cars were fast too! No "foo foo" cars allowed, they set the standard for many years. I get what you are saying- there are some heavy simularities to DKP. I myself am a big fan of both.

I've got a TON-O-Questions about the car from suspension, to axles, to brakes and steering setup.

In my own version I had planned on running a Winters quickchange with 3/4 ton bells, a 4 speed, Buick brakes with Wilson Welding Lincoln backing plates, cross steering, and I've been looking for a decent steering wheel. Probally a reverse dished Model T wheel, though I might change my mind If I could see what that car is running. I had planned on modifying a TCI chassis that was setup for a cross-spring and hairpins up front, Pete and Jake bars out back with coilovers. I was originally gonna run a SBC that was hot-hot-hot, but I'm thinking about running a Ford 460 after seeing one installed in a '29 roadster at Bonneville. I've already got the Ford trans too.

That shot is my favorite fendered roadster. My second is the red '28 that Larry Braga built for Danny Zank in the late '80s. Lots of subtle mods that improve the good looks of the Ford body. Larry stripped off too much of the chrome for my taste but you have to remember what the style was at the time and consider that Larry did well keeping as much of his own style while others were jumping on the billet smoothie bandwagon. For those of you not familar with the car, pull out StreetRodder June '91 or TRJ #7.

Back to your's Jim, I'd ditch the fake Caddy aircleaner and black alternator for a chrome alternator and a Repop louvered chrome Pontiac air cleaner. Mabey chrome the door hinges too.

Don't get carried away, this truck is for RESALE. My Tudor will have all the trick E.T. correct pieces. '57 Corvette dual quad engine, Muncie 4-speed, narrowed '50 Olds rear with Corvair coils around chrome shocks- a "coilover" from before coilovers, black naugahyde upholstery, Buick wires (135 & 235 Michelins)and brakes, stock '28 lights with fluted lenses on a '27 T bar, '28 taillight, a big ass Moto-Meter and wings, front bumper and boards hugging the ground, oh yeah!
That car had an interior I didn't like (tan vinyl with cordouroy inserts and a LeCarra wheel before they were "standard"). It also ran a bitchin' Ford small block with Cobra valve covers and 4 big Webers (suprisingly the car was never featured in a mag!). I passed up an original EMPI wood rimmed steering wheel for 40 bucks last weekend and I kick myself now.

My favorite Larry Braga car is the less famous orange '29 Roadster that sits on the deck on 4 & 10 inch Halibrands and is punched FULL of louvers in the hood, splash aprons and decklid. It was awesome- he was a good friend of the Early Timers.

What? You don't like my pictures? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I have at least 1 (sometimes a lot more) HAMB approved (tm) car on every spread. Also I write about 20 times more per magazine than the 650 words Titus tosses in with his column. I wish I could give every HAMBer a look to decide wether they love it or hate it- OK- as a matter a fact, the first 10 addresses I get e-mailed to me I will send them the latest issue (please don't send your address if you already get it). HAMBsters should really enjoy the upcoming Columbus issue that comes out next week, lots of HAMBers and HAMB style cars in that issue.

Vendor space at POSEURPROOF has not been determined but I really like your product, can you send a sample? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
