Im going to start the HAMB drags project. I plan to use my 56 merc, since I never drive my GT Fairlane im going to pull the 390 and toploader out and put them into the merc has anyone done this? Motor mounts and what about headders? one other question whats the best tri-power linkage out there rite now? I dont know if it will be ready this year im going to give it a hell of a try http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I had a 56 Merc for some years, 390 GT engine and toploader 4sp. Turn the stock motor mounts around and its a bolt in. Will have to build headers, as driver side is tight. As for tri-power use all stock Ford stuff, FoMoCo cable linkage adapts easy to stock tri-power. If running a standard trans, use a 332 truck bellhousing, as it has the knuckle for the stock clutch linkage. Stock radiator will cool fine...............OLDBEET

OLDBEET you mean the stock Gt mounts turn them around? How did yours run?

Can't remember if the mounts were Y-block of FE, there is a good article in Hot Rod Mag (1967?) that details this swap. I ran 4.11 gears, with the good gas then, look for high 12s. Think I used a stock 55 Chev drive shaft with different u-joints (was not custom made). My Merc was an original 312 with overdrive T-85. First I installed the F E with the stock trans, later changed bellhousing and a toploader 4sp. Used all stock Ford parts. Very fast street car in its day...............OLDBEET

WOW, thats still pretty fast for todays standards. I'm hoping just to get into the 13 range.
