I'm finally getting around to painting my hood. (winter clothing) It has stock louvers on the side, but I'm going to have some punched on the top too.
I can't decide whether to have them parrallel to the hinge or angled along the side. half round vs flat etc.
I would appreciate it if you would post some pictures of what you have to help me out.
Thanks much guys.

I don't know if this will help you at all, seeing how it is a 50s car, but here's the hood on my 55.
They sort of "V" toward the middle. I.E., the two in the center are the longest, then each row gets shorter as it goes out, and the front of each row moves back. The back row across the hood is straight.

Paul, I had a whole folder filled with hood louver patterns. Of course they died with the computer. I prefer the old "clam shell" round top louvers over the newer "staple" shaped ones.
There is a local guy that has the old round top dies. I had a hard time finding them.

........I had the hood of the Stude punched by a guy in Southern MD in 1984. I was told that I needed to "clean them up" after, so I took the hood into the basement and filed and sanded each one. There wasn't a sanding mark on any of them when I finished.........

.........the clamshells just fit the rounded lines of the Stude better. I feel that they are more "traditional." The square ones look more modern......IMHO........

Thanks to all who replied. I'll post pictures when I get it done. Don't hold your breath, it may be mid summer the way things are going with my schedule.

Made some progress with the hood side repair last night. My friend Ed opened his shop up so Eric could do some patching of the holes and cracks. The sides are now ready for paint. The top may go to the louver shop Next week. That's if I can make my decesion on the pattern I want punched. The choices keep coming in.
