Can anyone recomend a shop around Los Angeles that will rent out a bay and lift for the day, night or weekend? I heard of one in Thousand Oaks, but by the time I get the car towed there, I might as well pay to have it fixed right here.

A lift? A lift would make things easier for sure. However, I once grenaded my 61 impala rearend so bad that litte chunks of cast iron were missing from the center section. I pissed off my landlord by putting the rear up on jackstands and changing it in the parking lot of the complex. Took about 2 hours to change hogsheads out. Hardest part is removing axles. Ended up renting axle remover from local rent-all shop. I once removed an early chevy axle by reversing the brake drum and threading the lug nuts on a litte bit. Then used brake drum like a slide hammer. Only works if you are lucky

Reece, another way I'm told you can do it is by taking a length of chain, say 2-3 feet and putting opposite end links over the studs, then put your lug nuts on. Use a big hammer or something with substantial weight that you have lying around to pull the chain.

Deyomatic, man that's a good idea with the chain! Had not thought of that -but the next time I have to pull an axle I just might try it. Thanks- Reece
