View Full Version : My intro

Theo Douglas

Hello,

I'm just writing to introduce myself again 'cause I haven't posted on this board in a long, long time.
My name is Theo Douglas, and I live in Long Beach.
I'm a longtime HAMB reader and would like to become more than just a witness--hence my intro.
I drive a '63 Falcon hardtop with a 289 punched out to 305, a high-rise Edelbrock and a Edlebrock 4-barrel, Cal Custom polished valve covers, old school generator, power steering.
Behind it, a rebuilt C4 with a shift kit.
Lowered two inches--just enough in back to bottom out a lot. Needs another inch in front; it's got a little bit of tail dragger in it right now.
You mighta seen it around; it's like 10 different shades of black primer, 8-year-old black and red tuck-and-roll on seats, no carpet, Mercury Comet Caliente fake mag wheel caps on 14s.
This summer I gotta either finish it or work out a trade for another driver. I'm sick of it how it is, and that's my goal.
So, that's me.
Let the shit begin to fly.

Later,

Theo

Welcome anyway.

Hey Theo, how's tricks? You haven't had any problems with cylinder walls or block cracking with that big an overbore on that 289? It's been ages since I built one of those but back in the day, my machinist always advised me against going that big on anything but the mildest, low RPM 289 engines. Now I wonder if he was wrong. Did you do anything special piston or stroke wise to get those inches?

First off,
Thanks for all the replies.
I appreciate it, especially since I'm doin this on the side at work.
I'll do a better job of staying on this site this time--I swear.
And in answer to everyone's questions, yes, I will post pix as soon as I can take some.
And yeah, the 305 runs great, lumpy like you'd think, but it's hotter than a three-dollar bill.
I need to add a carb spacer so it doesn't boil the fuel, I need to add on a crappy Taiwanese fan shroud I bought on eBay, and then it may run a little cooler.
Way it is now, though, I overheated cruising at Paso last year, I have to watch heavy traffic coming home from work when it's like 100 degrees (way it's been here last couple days) and if it gets too warm it will stall.
Good news: It acts up, but apparently it doesn't ever get that hot--I majorly boiled it over, couple years ago right after the rebuild but it didn't melt the solder plugs that were there as part of the warranty.
That's probably way more than anybody wanted to know.
Later,

Theo

And, oh yeah, details:
My mechanic who actually did the work says it's bored .060 over; no cracks or nothing.
But the original old, weird 289 heads had had so much electrolysis that one of them sprung a leak and couldn't be patched.
So, woo-hoo, I had to spring for rebuilt 302 heads, 'cause I just love spending money on something that looks like a charcoal briquet.
Good news: More power, better gaskets, no more leaks.

Are you the same Theo Douglas that writes for the Press Telegram? If so, I enjoy alot of what you write. If not, welcome anyway.

Word of warning, keep a close eye on that overheating with that .060 overbore on a 289. Too hot, too many times and there might be chocolate milk on your dipstick.

But on the other hand, those can be very peppy motors when they are built right. They love a 650 Holley and some free breathing exhaust.

Big Daddy Eric

Welcome back... This brings up another question... How many HAMB Members are from Long Beach?

Hey there,

Found some pix of my car; I'll post 'em tonight, I hope.
It actually doesn't look too bad in these.
Yes, to answer the burning, question, I am the Theo Douglas who used to write for the Press-Telegram. But since December, I've written for the OC Weekly--got a new job.
If you saw that Von Dutch article the Weekly ran back in January, well, I wrote it.
And yeah, how many HAMBers do live in Long Beach? I'd sorta like to know, myself. I live not too far from Alex's, which fortunately, is not too far from Joe Jost, 'cause they have the best Pabst draft in town.
Anyhoo,

Late,

Theo
