Putting an aftermarket quarter on a buddies 65 convert. Hammer welding with the Henrob. you can see the minimal distortion. I havent done any metal work or grinding yet, this is the raw welds. I really like this torch!

man i want one of those...
the whole package runs for a thousand bucks down here, which seems like a fair bit for a torch and two regulators, and various extraneous junk... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

That looks real nice man. SO much less grinding too.
Nothing worse than grinding a pile of mig wire off a quater panel that long.
How far apart were the tack welds. And did you skip around or just go from one end to the other letting things cool off and on.

I started out with a lap joint. (I put a step flange on the "car" side, but it's over kill) Once I was happy with the fit, I screwed and clamped everything in place, then cut thru the joint with a 1/32" cut off wheel, peeling the flange off the bottom, and tacked every 3". That leaves a butt joint with a nice gap for gas welding. Then I welded about 1" at a time, hammering each weld, and cooling completely with compressesd air. I skipped around, but complete cooling after each weld makes skipping less importent.

Tinbender I wish you weren't so far away, i'd definitely want to be looking over your shoulder. I just cant get that kind of quality weld out of my henrob. Not coming from a welding background, I really dont know what the problem is. I got pretty frustrated trying the henrob the other day on a fender. What size tip did you use? I'm beginning to think my regulators are junk or somethings wrong with the torch. seems like the welds were just balling up.
Also
I've noticed that I can't totally shut the oxygen off at the torch, I hear a slight hiss, does yours do that?
I'd appreciate any input, hate to keep the thing in the box and not use it.

mine was doing that hissing too i thought it was the henrob also...turned out to be a slight chip in the taper on the inside of the hose end...check that out...just a thought...it did it on my regular torch too
maybe this will help?

31&37, I use the smallest tip for sheet metal. They have a 1.5 and I think that would be worth buying. Mine doesn't hiss or leak. Try a little soapy water to leak test it. The packings around the valves are adjustable, you might try tighting the nut under the valve.
My best advise would be to practice on scrap. Don't attempt any "real" welding until your happy with your practice welds. The most important thing in gas welding (any type of welding actually) is the keeping a nice liquid puddle without letting it melt away. Hours with the torch is really the only way to learn.
BTW, my new shop is almost done. I'd be more than happy to teach any HAMBer to weld. There's no better feeling than "passing the torch" http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Where are all those hole I get? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

wow those henrob torches sound awesome. maybe I should get one of those next instead of a tig. I think you can get them for $500 or so if you already have a torch outfit right?
Any more pics of that car? Is that laying on the ground or what?

Thanks for the tips tinbender, I'm going to get it out again this weekend and see if I can get a little more skilled on the thing. I bought it to try to save a 31
roadster quarter by grafting on a better tail section, I know its capable of a much better weld than the Mig i'm used to using.

Any particuliar reason why the HENROB (at $400) versus the MECCO Midget (105.00 @ www.tinmantech.com (http://www.tinmantech.com)) ?

I've had one for 4-years now and haven't opened the case. I hope I still remember the basics of using it.

While the capabilities may be comparable, your cost comparison is not...
For $105 you get the midget and one tip...that's all.
For $339 I recieved a complete HENROB torch kit including the torch, 5 tips, 2 cutting accesories, shield, welding lens for aluminum, instruction video, and a carrying case...AND free shipping!
